Chapter 16- True Fear
My eyes widened as I saw 14 metal shafts come from the trees, heading towards me and Blaise.I had to do something..
My vision flared a thousand colours at once..
And at that moment, I heard a sound like shattered glass.
Two dark walls from either side came in, covering us. I heard the pitter patter of arrows striking something solid, and I winced as I felt small pangs of pain along my.... Wait a minute.
I waited for a moment, shaking slightly, then lifted away the dark walls. But... They weren't walls....
My eyes widened in shock.
Looking around, I saw that Scar and Alex were similarly affected, as well as a third demon I now saw peeking through the trees. They froze, astonishment and fear Etched on their faces. I looked down at my hands, and my reality set in.
And I laughed.
I laughed like a man would if he had been trodden down his whole life, and finally got the strength to rise up
I laughed like a slave who had been beaten would laugh if he got the chance to fight his master.
I laughed like I never had before, all of my pain and fear rushing off of me at once. I felt free. I felt... Happy. But it wasn't the normal kind of happy...
I felt the relief that only the thought of revenge could give.
I spread my two large, black wings on either side of me, and still grinning I looked at my foes. I knew they couldn't dare compete with me now. They couldn't kill me even if they tried. And so, I took a long, good look at my wings.
They were black, like a ravens, and looked very shiny. That is, the feathers were. Among my wings were small round scales, set in patches across their expanse. The scales were mostly around the joint of my wing, in which, two white, curved, and deadly spikes rose out of. They were the colour of polished bone. Both of my wings were different, not being identical like an angels, but they had the same characteristics. one of my wings had a large, jagged, spike coming out of the tip. I looked as if a winged demon and an angel had a child. And indeed, my father was an angel. My mother a demon. But she didn't bear wings like mine. She didn't have wings for one.
My wings were larger then a angels, and wider too. The part that attached to my back was as long as my arm, and quite thick.
I raised my head to the sky and closed my eyes, basking in the warm sunlight. Nobody moved, nobody spoke. You could hear a pin drop. Then I lowered it and stared directly at Scar and Alex. I felt their fear radiating off of them. Fear of the damned, of the unknown. Fear... Of a monster.
They knew my power.... And I knew it too.
My power could only be described as True Fear.
I took a step forward, going right up to Scar. She shook slightly, too shocked to even move. I touched her cheek lightly, looking her in the eyes.
"All you ever did was hurt me. You broke me down, and wouldn't let me stand up. I tried, believe me I did, to be the best sibling I could be. But you didn't care about me. All you cared about was power."
"T-thats not t-true I-"
I rested my hand on her shoulder, making her stop and flinch. I never once took my eyes off of her.
"Well you never proved otherwise. And for that I should kill you."
Dead silence struck the air, a silent hammerblow. Then I whispered
"But I won't. because even though you've hurt me time and time again, I will not become what you always wanted me to be. A executioner. So I will give you a chance to flee. You and Alex both, for he once was who I looked up to. But if you choose to stay, I will have no choice but to destroy you."
I took my hand off her shoulder and silently started counting in my head. She backed away and ran, and I let her go. Alex hesitated, then he followed her. The third demon tried to escape, but I reached out a hand towards him, in the shape of a claw. It glowed, and he froze in place, scratching at his throat as he desperately tried to breathe. Then at once I clenched my fist, and I heard a loud crunch. He fell to the floor, dead. I looked away from the body and turned to Blaise. To my horror she appeared shocked and even scared.
"You... I... I don't know what to say."
I helped her up gently, moving slow so as to appear calm and not startle her.
"Then don't say anything."
"But... I must say something."
"Then say it. There's not much else about it."
She took a deep, shaky breathe, then looked me in the eyes.
"I heard your l-laugh.... Scratch you sounded crazy. Evil. Are you really the same person...?"
I touched her cheek, but unlike what I did with Scar, I used it as a source of comfort. She was shaking slightly. I felt hurt inside. I couldn't believe she was scared of me... It made me doubt myself.
"I am. And I promise, no matter what happens, I will always be here for you. I'm still the same person, beautiful Blaise, just a little different that's all."
Her lip trembled slightly, and I thought she was going to cry. Instead she pulled me in and kissed me. My eyes widened in surprise, and even my wings flinched a little, then I gave in and closed my eyes, holding her close. After a moment she pulled away, and I saw a single tear roll down her cheek. I brushed it away with my thumb.
"Everything's going to be alright."
A voice behind me made me freeze.
"Azriel, we need to talk."
