Dissected Frogs?

Avery's POV

(Ian)

"The day is here! We'll be dissecting frogs." announced Mr. Steinman as he entered the classroom. Most of us clapped and Ian hooted. The girl sitting next to her, Sarah laughed. Sarah was my friend and Ian, Cliff, and Aaron's. She had brown hair, dark eyes, and fair skin, with a shimmering of freckles. But then she put her hand up, with a worried look on her face.

"Yes, Sarah?"

"Um, Mr. Steinman? The frogs were already dead right, because it would be unethical and inhumane to kill them for an experiment." She talked a little more (and a little more; that girl talked a lot). Eva and her friends snickered, but she didn't seem to care.

"No, Sarah. These frogs had already died of natural causes."

"Oh, ok." She nodded and went to whisper with Ian again.

"All right I'll be passing out frogs."

"We've got to touch those things?" asked Eva, looking like she'd stepped in horse crud or something. "I'm so not doing that!" I rolled my eyes at Aaron, smiling. He smiled back (cue the wobbly knees) and muttered, "I cannot believe her!" I giggled. But the truth was, I was just as disgusted as Eva.

"Well, Miss Eva," said Mr. Steinman, looking amused. "Suite yourself. Let me just get my gradebook and give you a nice bug zero."

I literally almost burst out laughing. This was one of the many reasons I loved Biology. I made the mistake of looking at Aaron, and we both started shaking with giggles. He gave me another crooked smile and I felt got my cheeks getting warm. Not the constipated tomato look again! I thought, as I looked over to Eva. She looked like she was going to burst into a hissy fit, momentarily comforting me.

Aaron's POV

Mr. Steinman passed out our materials. It was a tray with a decomposing frog carcess and another tray of materials.

"Be careful with the sharp tools." instructed Mr. Steinman. "What does he think we are-toddlers?" whispered Eva snarkily to her partner. She happened to have a very loud whisper. Mr. Steinman ignored her.

"I will lead you through the cutting process and you will be graded by your notes." he continued, unfazed.

I was nervous. Very nervous. I knew Avery was terrified of frogs and toads. What if I did something totally disgusting and ruined everything? At least, ruined it more than I already had.

Avery's POV

I was absolutely terrified of frogs and Aaron knew. What if he thought I was some sort of wimp because of it or what if I got us a bad grade because of it? Gosh I was scared!

Aaron's POV

We each grabbed some tools and took out our pens. "You can do it." I heard Avery mutter. "You'll be fine." I answered, trying to console her. But she was too smart for that. She smiled nervously back to me. What we didn't know was that disaster was going to strike, thanks to yours truly.

"Ok so first you are going to take the surgery knife and slit the stomach of the frog. Make sure your gloves and goggles are on."

Avery and I both had a knife and we simultaneously reached for the frog. For a second, our hands touched. Shocked, I jerked mine back, tipping over the tray

Straight onto Avery.

Avery's POV

Our hands met for a second, and Aaron jerked his back, tipping frog guts...all over me. I'm not usually a screamer, I was completely and positively scared of frogs. I could feel tears bursting in my eyes, not because of Eva and her cronies' laughter, but because of Aaron's reaction. I heard Aaron and Sarah both say, "Are you OK?"

NO-I was not OK! Not being able to take it, I ran out of the room, to anywhere, anywhere away from the torture of a place this class had become.

Aaron's POV

I was such an IDIOT! It had been shock that had caused me to jerk my hand away, and surprise. She probably hated me know, and had no idea how much I liked her. Not like it mattered anymore...

Ian's POV

The rest of Biology was pretty grim. Sarah looked really, really sad and I tried to comfort her, but didn't know how. Across the room Aaron looked like a ghost. I wished I could comfort him too. Didn't he see that Avery DID like her?

It was obvious that Avery liked Aaron, but the girl I liked didn't even know me, much less like me back.
