The Runt That Gets Nothing

It's Time (Chapter 3)

Today was finally the day when Crowkit, Nightkit, and Hollowkit become apprentices. They were six moons old now and that means that they will become apprentices later on today. 


Around Sunhigh, the leader of RiverClan, Hollystar, had called an announcement. As usual, everyone gathered under the Highledge and got comfortable. "As we all know, we have three kits who are ready to become apprentices today," Hollystar began. "Crowkit, Nightkit, and Hollowkit. Please step toward."

Silverfrost slightly nudged the three kits forward as they stood. The three kits then padded over to Hollystar. Nightkit had her tail and head held up in pride, and Crowkit had his tail up in pride as well. Hollowkit simply padded forward with a small smile on her face. As they paused in front of Hollystar, the leader then continued. "Nightkit, you're mentor will be Lionfang," Hollystar turned to look at the warrior. "Lionfang, you have had great experience from you're mentor and I hope that you will pass all that down to Nightpaw," she added. "Of course, Hollystar." Lionfang dipped his head gratefully to the leader and touched noses with Nightpaw, like the tradition goes. 

Hollystar then turned to Crowkit. "Now Crowkit, you will now be known as Crowpaw. Instead of being a warrior, StarClan has another fate for you. You will be the Medicine Cat's apprentice. Leaffall, I hope you can pass all your knowledge unto Crowpaw." Hollystar meowed as she turned to look at Leaffall, who was sitting at the entrance of her den. "Of course, Hollystar!" Leaffall purred and padded over to them. She then bent her head down in front of Crowpaw to touch noses. 

Hollystar then turned to Hollowkit, who was patiently waiting for her turn. "Hollowkit, you will now be known as Hollowpaw. Your mentor will be me, Hollystar." Hollystar meowed, smiling softly. Hollowpaw, Nightpaw, and Crowpaw's eyes all widened in surprise. They certainly weren't expecting this. "I will pass all my knowledge of training and hunting that I had gotten from my mentor to you." Hollystar said as she jumped down from the Highledge and padded to Hollowpaw. The leader then bent her head to touch noses with Hollowpaw. "May StarClan light all of your paths!" Hollystar said, loud enough to where everyone could hear her.

"Nightpaw! Crowpaw! Hollowpaw!" Everyone cheered their names over and over again until they quietened down. Silverfrost ran over to the three new apprentices. "I'm so proud of you three!" She happily cried. Even though Silverfrost wasn't their birth mother, she acted like she was. Hollowpaw, Crowpaw, and Nightpaw all smiled. 

~~ Time Skip To Supper ~~

Hollowpaw, Nightpaw, and Crowpaw were sitting by the Fresh-kill pile eating. "I don't get why you are the leader's apprentice! That should be my place not yours, Hollowpaw!" Nightpaw hissed. "Get the stick out of your butt, Nightpaw! Why can't you just be happy with what you have? Why do you always, and I mean always, compare yourself with someone else?" Crowpaw hissed, annoyed at his sister. Hollowpaw looked down and started to poke at her prey, not really hungry anymore. Nightpaw huffed and looked away. Crowpaw turned to Hollowpaw and said, "don't worry. I'll always be here to defend you, Hollowpaw. After all, that's what family does, right?" Hollowpaw slightly smiled and nodded. "Yeah..." Hollowpaw sighed.
