Chapter One
A tiny kit was crouched in a dead bush, almost perfectly camouflaged by his ruddy brown pelt and darker spots. He peered out at the ground with his tiny, icy blue eyes with a look of pure mischief. A few seconds later, he jumped out of the bush at a white tabby kit with light gray stripes. The kit squeaked under the weight of the brown kit, who mewed with triumph. The white kit, though, slipped out from under the brown kit and wrestled him to the ground. The brown kit went limp, letting the little tabby jump onto his side. The tabby tried to yowl, but it came out as more of a purr."You've killed me!" the brown kit gasped in pretend agony. The tabby kit grinned happily.
"The great warrior Eaglestar strikes again!" the tiny tabby crowed.
"Treekit!" a voice called from the nursery. "Eaglekit! Come on!"
The little brown kit called Treekit scrambled out from under Eaglekit and went sprinting towards the nursery. Eaglekit stumbled to his paws and ran after his brother. Treekit went slipping into the nursery, landing spread-eagle on his belly. Eaglekit calmly stepped over him and sat in front of his mother, a soft cream she-cat.
"Yes, mother?" Eaglekit asked. Treekit quickly sat up, trying to mimic the politeness of Eaglekit. The cream cat mrrowed with laughter.
"Well, someone's noticed that you're over six moons old now," the she-cat began. Eaglekit waited calmly for his mother's next words. Treekit's eyes were widened in anticipation.
"Violetstar thinks it's time that you'll be made apprentices, you two!" the she-cat meowed. Eaglekit nodded with acceptance. His brother, however, was jumpier than an excited rabbit.
"Apprentices!" Treekit mewed. He jumped around so much that he crashed into his mother.
"Sorry," Treekit stammered. The cream cat purred happily. A black and white she-cat with a scarred face smiled as she saw them.
"Having a little kit trouble, Fallingleaf?" the she-cat grinned.
"Nothing I can't handle, Shimmerpelt," Fallingleaf replied. Shimmerpelt shook her head and went to get some fresh-kill.
"Who are we training under?" Eaglekit asked.
"It's a secret!" Fallingleaf whispered to them. "It's between me and Violetstar!" Treekit looked truly mystified by his mother's words.
"I'm gonna be the greatest warrior the forest has ever seen!" Treekit mewed. Eaglekit turned his pale amber eyes on his brother and smirked.
"I'll be your deputy when you become leader, O Great and Powerful Treestar," Eaglekit said with mock respect. Treekit raised his head high, trying to look as dignified as possible.
"Your ceremonies are tomorrow," Fallingleaf smiled. "I'm so proud of you!" Fallingleaf bent over and licked Treekit's ear, making the brown kit fall over and play dead.
"You have bested me, she-cat!" Treekit rasped. Fallingleaf purred and gave Treekit a smug grin.
"The mighty Fallingstar strikes again!" Fallingleaf meowed. All three cats mrrowed with laughter.
