I'd woken up that morning at 4:30, so I could get in some extra time to play video games before I had to start working on my science fair project. At 5:00, I was just finishing a level of my favorite computer game - Rise of the Gnomes - when I heard a whooshing sound beside me. I didn't bother to look at it.
"Go away, Maddie," I mumbled. Maddie, my super-annoying little sister, got a toy vacuum for her birthday a couple weeks ago, and she loves it. I figured the stupid vacuum was making the sound.
Until I realized that it was 5:00 in the morning, and Maddie had trouble getting out of bed if it was before 10:00.
I slowly turned my head to the side until the source of the whooshing sound was fully in view.
It was a robot.
I almost screamed, then remembered that Mom and Dad were in Hawaii on a business trip, and Maddie was the heaviest sleeper in the world. So instead, I leaned forward and inspected it closely.
It had a shiny chrome surface, curving gracefully into a cylindrical body. There was a thin tire on the bottom - most likely for transportation. The head was cube shaped. A vent was on the lower half, and above it were two round cameras. A sensor lay flat on the top of its head.
The whooshing sound turned to a whirring. With a beep, the robot seemed to come to life.
"I am here to escort you to Mechania," it said, in a high-pitched mechanical voice. "Please press the pad of your right thumb onto the sensor."
It tilted its head down so I could easily access the sensor. I did what it asked, and a loud beep resounded from the vent as it straightened.
"Creating 3D figure..." the robot said. A section of its chest area opened up to reveal a screen. The screen lit up and showed a spinning model of a person. I squinted and looked closer. The spinning person was me!
"Storing 3D figure under title '52873091,' " said the robot. "Accessing 52873091... teleportation commencing... prepare for delivery to Mechania!"
Suddenly, my stomach felt strange. I bent over and tried to throw up, but nothing came out. As I straightened, I noticed my fingers getting longer. I could only watch in horror as my hands - and soon my entire body - were sucked into the screen on the robot. As soon as the last of my body went into the screen, the robot started beeping so loudly that I had to cover my ears. Although maybe it was only ear-splitting because I was in his chest cavity. Well, whatever the reason, I began to float up, as if I were in water. My vision started to fade. I tried to breathe, but ended up coughing out the gel-like substance. I flailed around, attempting escape, but I could only move very slowly as the lack of oxygen weakened me. I felt myself sinking to the bottom as my vision went black.
