Chapter ONE
“HIDE!!” A piercing, strong female voice yells. I look up from my old and tattered book. A lady stands there. Traumatised. I spring to my feet, swooping blankets over children and their parents, ignoring the screams of distress. I clutch a striped black and brown blanket, gazing at an old lady. All of these people need help, and I’m the only one, as well as my friend, fit enough to help save my district.
“RYDIN!” Jared screams. I turn and nod. We sprint to the guns, grabbing one each. I snatch the huge one and clutch it in my arms, being careful to not pull the trigger. Jared grumbles as he grabs the small hand gun, his black hair shielding his eyes from the helpless citizens taking cover in the building, hiding under blankets. We hear the whoosh of the multiple wings flapping outside the window hidden behind the tattered curtains that have been there for god knows how long.
I remember coming in here when I was little and attempting to sew new curtains that still hang delicately off the top of a small window in the corner. The pattern is of my favourite animal; the turtle.
“Rydin,” Jared calls frantically. I haul the gun into a shooting position and hurry towards one of the windows as Jared runs to the other with the small hand gun. All of the helpless people taking cover hush and hide. We hear the scream of the creatures. They’re coming. The scream becomes louder, similar sounding to a teacher scraping her long, painted nails on a blackboard whilst her student’s chatter and squabble.
“Don’t die,” Jared tells me softly and smiles. I smirk.
“Don’t worry about me, worry about yourself,” I reply.
