Chapter 2: The Events Leading up to Chapter One
It was 9:00 on a Tuesday night and I was studying for finals in my room. I heard a knock on my door. I opened the door and my parents and little brother walked in. “Hey sugar, you comin’ to Todd’s FIRST EVER performance?” mom asked.
“Can’t mom,” I replied. “Got to study for finals. This calculus one is HUGE.”
“Aw, come on sissy! It’s not too long! Pleaseeee come!” Todd said. Now my brother is the cutest thing to ever walk the face of the earth. He’s six years old and is so sweet and chubby. Like a panda. So it was pretty hard for me NOT to stay. He gets away with EVERYTHING he does!
“Fine,” I say putting my stuff up. “I’ll go. But if I fail calculus, it’s on you guys!” I try to sound threatening but I just can’t hide my smile. “That’s my girl!” my dad said while patting my back. We all laugh and go in for a hug. Little did I know; that would be the last hug I’d EVER receive from my family.
The concert was not as bad as I thought it would be. Todd got a nice solo and all the old ladies were immediately smitten. As we were walking out one of them came up to my dad and said: “was that your son up there who sang that cute solo? If so, you must be so proud!” My mother was so delighted with the attention Todd was getting. She exchanged phone numbers with other moms and everything. These ladies need to calm down! It’s just a child’s play. Gosh! We pick up some cupcakes on the way out and head out to the car.
My mother had tears in her eyes as she said “Son, I am so proud of you! It felt good being able to say I made you!”
“And I helped!” my dad put in.
I rolled my eyes at my parent’s immature behavior. But Todd enjoyed every bit of it. He was smiling and laughing and just having a good time. While I on the other hand would rather be home studying than being stuck with the goofballs that are my family. But ya gotta love ‘em!
“Hey sport, where do ya want to eat at?” my dad turned around and asked Todd.
“WENDY’S!” my brother shouted with glee.
“Ok, kiddo!” my mom said. In a couple of minutes we pulled in to the parking lot.
But something went horribly wrong.
“Hey, mom, what are those lights over there?” Todd asked.
“Oh, honey!” my mom said, “That’s a car! I’ll try and pull out of its way! The driver looks drunk!” my mother tried to start the car but it was too late for the driver was barreling toward us too fast! And all I remember was holding my dad’s hand and the sound of my brother’s crying and screaming. And then the flashing lights and blood overwhelmed me as I passed out.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I woke up in a white room and thought I was in heaven. “I may be fine up here but I still need to ask about my family,” I thought.
“Mom, dad, Todd…” I croaked out to a lady in white. She must be an angel.
“Ma’am, I am so sorry to break the news to you but-“
“NO! NO!” I interrupted, fearing the worse.
“-Your family died in a car crash due to a drunk driver. He died as well and you barely survived with only a broken arm! Now I don’t know how that happened, but by the grace of God you’re still alive! And we also called your grana and she picked your things up and is here now. We’ll let you rest for a bit before letting her take you home. I hope the rest of your life will be a good one.”
I nodded my head to the best of my ability and turned over and sobbed my eyes out.
