Immortal
She was draped in a clean black dress staring down at the grass below her. She loved white too though. But today that colour was too cheerful, too pure, too bright. Even the thought of how bright it was now made her eyes water. Though, she knew it wasn't the dress that did this. She wanted to wear black. Good thing too, the funeral was today."Sapph?" Maria laid a soft hand of the shivering girl's shoulder. "The taxi is here." Sapphire silently nodded refusing to meet her sister's eyes. Shadow, following his wife, gazed at Sapphire in pity.
"Are you okay?" He simply asked. Sapphire scowled.
"No, no, no, don't ask me that!" She faced him and if looks could kill, he'd be long dead. Maria backed away from the furious hedgehog and took a hold of her husband's hand.
"Won't you wait in the taxi?" Shadow looked into her eyes for any signs, there were none. He nodded and made his way towards the taxi. By now Sapphire was a weeping mess on the grassy floor. Maria slowly sat next to her. "He only asked if you're okay, Sapph.
"I know, I know, it's just...whenever someone asks me if I'm okay, it's just another reminder that I'm not." She breaks down into loud sobs. "I'm really, really not." A small smile forms on Maria's lips as she helps her sister off the ground. She didn't need to persuade. Or even speak for that matter. No. She reached out and hugged the cyan hedgehog who great fully clung to her.
"Come on." Maria whispers. "The taxi is waiting."
The funeral went well. As well as a funeral can go at least. Everyone said their vows. Everyone said their goodbyes. All but one. Sapphire stood in front of the grave staring at it. No, she wasn't staring at it. She wasn't even there. She was somewhere else entirely, in her own thoughts. She was still in her trance by the time everyone was gone. She was alone with him. She read the grave stone again. Just to see if it was real.
Here lies Surge, a good friend, father and husband.
Tears trailed down her damp cheeks as she gripped the hem of her dark dress.
"Surge, there isn't anything I can say right now that I haven't already." She watched as her tears landed on tarmac beneath her. "I suppose I'm lucky though. To have something so good that saying goodbye is this hard." Sapphire sucks in her breath and clenches her eyes shut. "One last...one last favour, before I go?" Her dull grey eyes shoot open and stare at the grave. "Stop this. Stop this please. You can't be dead. You're immortal for crying out loud!" She was yelling at him. A sigh escaped her lips as fresh tears fell. "Please...for me?" She stared at the grave for a few more seconds until reality struck her hard. Surge was gone. Sapphire turned to walk away, but her phone rang interrupting her. Choking back a sob and quickly drying her eyes she answered in the most casual voice she could muster at that moment. "Hello?"
"Just for you."
