chapter 1
DREW’S POV.I opened my front door slowly. It better not be the neighbors, they come over and ask for things at the most ridiculous times. I gasped when I saw who it was.
“Valery?!” I whispered at her.
“Is your mom home?” She whispered back. My eyes dropped to a slender figure next to her. Alaric.
I nodded and put a finger to my lips. But she wasn’t looking at my face. She was staring at my bare torso. I looked down at my sleeping attire. Grey sweats that hung pretty low on my hips, even my mom commented on my sweats. I wasn’t wearing a shirt, and I hit the gym every day (well, used to. Now I’m out with Valery every day, so now only on days we aren’t) so I was toned, but not big muscly. I had abs, sure, but they weren’t popping out like weird hot dogs.
I watched her worry her lip and heard her click her tongue piercing against her teeth, as her eyes traveled back to my face.
“Is your mom here?” she asked again, her voice husky.
I nod and again put a finger to my lips. I let her in. Alaric follows, but his toe nails clack. I shut the door softly and grab Val closer to me so I could talk to her. I take hold of Alaric’s collar so he wouldn’t make noise.
“Will he freak if I pick him up? My mom can hear anything. Take off your shoes.” I whisper in her ear.
She nods, “Just pet him on his sides so he doesn’t growl or anything.” She steps back, piling her clothes on the floor.
I looked down at the big dog. Jesus. He was slender, but he was huge. I ran my hands on either side of him, and he looked up, giving me a curious look. I put my left arm in front of his front legs, and my right arm hooked his back legs. I picked him up, and he squirmed a little. Valery ran a hand over him and he calmed down.
I motioned my head to Val and she followed me down the hall quietly. I pushed my door open and gently dropped Alaric down on my floor. I look around my room as she closed the door slowly behind me. I’m glad my mom had made me clean my room today before seeing Valery. My room was boring, I had a queen bed in the corner, brown blank walls, and books piled on my desk. I had drawings on there too. I had a couch on the other side of the room.
Alaric lays on my brown rug on the floor. I turned to look at Val, who takes in my room.
“We can talk normal now, my mom’s bedroom is upstairs.”
“I would say it’s boring, but my whole house is white and filled with white granny knick knacks.” She smirks.
“Val, why are you here? I mean, I’m not mad that you are, just confused.” I frowned at her.
She groaned, “I went out to see Kale.”
I tried to tame the flame of anger that grew up from my toes.
“Kale?” I asked, body rigid.
“Just listen to the story before you explode.” She plops herself on my bed, and tells me how creepy he looked underneath the light, leaning against the brick store wall. She tells me how Alaric acted, how he slams her against the wall, which makes me want to find the bastard and kill him. And then the kiss, and that’s when I stand from the bed, my teeth aching from the grinding I’ve been putting them through. She pulled me back down and told me how Alaric jumped on him and how she punched him so hard he fell down. That sent her into giggles, and I tried not to laugh loudly. And at the end of it all, how she found out he loved her best friend whom she tried to forget.
“Why did you want to forget her?” we were laying on my bed, not under the covers, mind you. She ran her fingers over my stomach, tracing the muscle lines. I have goose bumps from her doing that.
“Because, I didn’t want to bring any of my old life with me. I wanted to restart. And to restart, you have to leave things behind, and she was –is part of my old life.” She shrugged, but I could see the hurt cloud in her eyes. I frowned but didn’t respond.
“I don’t know how all this brought you here.” Her fingers were now trailing up my chest, to my collar bones. It started getting hard to concentrate.
“At Radiator?” she referred to our town. I shake my head.
“No, my house. You never explained why you came here, not that I’m not happy to see you, but I mean, my mom’s home, you know?” I blamed her fingers -which were now trailing my jawline- that made it hard to make my sentence a structured one.
“Oh. I snuck out to see him, and Alaric had to go with me, otherwise he’d have a piss fit. And I forgot to bring my keys with me, and there’s no other way to get in the house. And I was thinking about spending the night on the porch, when your face popped up in my mind.” She smiled, tracing my lips with an index finger.
“You can stay here tonight.” I offered. But I wouldn’t let anything happen, I wouldn’t be a dick and do that to her, especially when my mom was home.
“Can I have one of your shirts?” She bit her lip.
The thought of seeing her bare legs, set me on fire. I felt my cheeks heat as I nodded.
“Yeah. Yeah, sure. Yeah.” I nodded again and got up, going to my dresser. Oh, did I even mention I have a dresser? I do. Oh, and a closet. And bathroom. My room was big.
I pulled one of my softest cotton shirts out. It was a plain light grey shirt. I tossed it to her.
“That one’s the softest I got. You can change in the bathroom, if you want.” I blushed again, thinking about her changing in front of me. I swallowed. Is it hot in here? It feels hot. I don’t even have a shirt on and it’s hot.
She looked down, smiling shyly. “I’ll change in the bathroom.” As she passed me, she gently punched my arm.
I sat at the edge of my bed, thinking about Kale. If I ever saw him again, I’m decking him right in the face. Hell, not just in the face, I’ll punch him anywhere I got the chance. Hopefully he was true to his word, and left Radiator.
My bathroom door opened, and I watched Val step out, her head down with a shy smile. I took her in. Her hands were playing with the clutching the hem of the shirt, at her sides. Her was hair was tousled around, and her pale legs looked smooth. I swallowed.
She walked slowly to me, giving a pat on the head to Alaric. Her bare feet pad on my floor, and my eyes travel up and down her body. Wow, girls are great. She now leans over me and puts her hands on my shoulders, her pouty lips making their descent to mine. When we kissed, I gripped my bed sheets, because I didn’t trust my hands one bit.
“Thank you for letting me stay here.” She says after we broke the kiss. I nod, still dazed.
I cleared my throat, “Yeah, yeah. Anything for you, Val.” She was perched on my right leg, her left leg on one side, and her right on the other side of it. Her fingers teased the end of my hair.
“We’ll have to leave early tomorrow. Really early, if we still want to make it to school.” I tell her, and she groans. She hops off my legs and throws herself on my bed.
“We have to drop off Alaric then. In the morning.” Her voice sounds muffled. I turn and look back to see that she climbed in the covers, face in the pillows.
“I know.” I said as I turned off my light. I crawled up the bed, getting in the covers next to her. I started pulling her closer to me, I felt her tense.
“Relax, I won’t try anything, I promise.” I whisper in her ear. She relaxes, and curls up with me.
And it was like sleeping for the first time.
