Chapter 3

“Wait, you want to be my friend? Fine, you can help us escape. Eight paws are better than four.” Midnight hissed.

“I don`t want to escape with you, but I will help you escape. They keep the keys over there. Okay here is what we do. When someone comes to play with us, we grab the keys and hide them in your cage, then, at night, you open your cage and walk free out that window. Got it?” Tiger mewed.

“So, you`re positive this will work, right?” Midnight hissed.

“Yes, it`s full-proof! I have seen a cat do this before. Her name was Fern. Though, that was five years ago...” Tiger meowed.

Fern came from this animal shelter? That must of been how she knew when the men were coming! She knew their scent from when she was a kitten!

“Fern? I know a cat named Fern! She was my best friend in our tribe!” Midnight mewed happily. At least she had some kind of connection to this mysterious cat.

“Was she a gray tabby?” He mewed with satisfaction.

“Yes, yes!” Midnight yowled with pleasure. One thing Midnight wondered through all this was why did Fern never tell her about this friend of hers?

Before Tiger could reply, a human walked in. It was a girl with long, black hair and very tall. She slowly walked over to Midnight`s cage and curled her fingers around the opening. Then, she said, “Let`s open this cage. I like this black cat.”

“That one?” The man next to her chuckled. “Okay, if you like this one.”

He grabbed the keys and walked up to the gate separating the girl from my reaches. I wondered if she posed any threat to me.

She slowly opened the cage once the man inserted the keys. I fearfully crept back, wondering what to do next.
