I'll See You Soon
“How could this happen? This can’t be happening… oh no… no please no.” Jacob’s voice sounded panicked as he raced towards the sound of the gunshots and children’s screams. He scanned the area, calling out for Madeline. He spotted her, along with a few other people, and a few children who were being rushed away. Her once beautiful blonde hair was now stained red as she laid on the ground, crying, holding the fresh wounds that were on her body. He raced over, collapsing to his knees beside her, “M-Madeline! Oh my god… oh no…”Someone else had called the police and ambulances while Jacob attempted to help his girlfriend. He tried putting pressure on the wounds but it did no good. She winced with every breath she took, and every slight touch that was applied to her. Jacob slowly realized there was no saving her. He tried to think but couldn’t, the only thing on his mind was the realization she was going to die and he couldn’t do anything about it.
With a slow shaky breath, he ran a gentle hand through her hair and he cooed, telling her she would be okay and the ambulanced would be there any minute. She looked up at him, her blue eyes seeming more of a dull gray. He forced back tears, trying to stay calm as to not make her worried.
He then began to sing, trying to sing her to sleep, knowing she was in unbearable pain and quickly bleeding out from her wound, along with knowing there was nothing he could do to save her, no matter how hard he tried... he wanted to her death to be painless, asleep...
She looked at him, her teary eyes darkening as her life inched closer to its end. She weakly sat up, only causing her more pain from the effort. He quickly helped her sit up, and looked into her eyes, he could see her pain. It was painful for him, he felt tears well up in his eyes once again, not being able to hold them back he began to cry.
She softly kissed him, putting a weak, but gentle hand on his cheek, her own tears streaming down her cheeks, due to her pain and seeing his pain. He kissed back, holding her close to him. He felt her slow, shaky breathing as he held her. He was losing her.
Her body grew heavy as she slowly pulled out of the kiss and she weakly whispered, "I-I L-love you" before taking her last painful, shaky breath.
He held her lifeless body close to him as he sobbed, her last words running through his head.
He softly hummed to her as he sobbed. He stayed with her until the police came, but even then, he couldn't bring himself to leave her side. He didn’t want to believe she was actually gone.
He was eventually forced to leave the scene. The following week, he wouldn't sleep.... he couldn't sleep... Couldn't eat... the sorrow was too much for him to handle. Depression slowly gained its control over him.
The funeral was about a week after her death, he stood by her coffin, looking at her face, pale and smooth like porcelain. She wore a black dress, with black elbow length silk gloves. He remembered this dress, it was the dress she wore to prom, when they first began dating. She still looked beautiful even after her painful death.
It was sickening for him to see her like this though. To see her appear so at ease and peaceful after all the pain they went through just the week prior. To see her looking like a doll, all dressed up for other people to look at. Looking like she would wake up any moment, like her closed eyes would just open up and she would be okay.
He stayed until the very end of the viewing, after everyone left. He wanted to spend as much time with her as he could, knowing he would never have a chance to see her again. He didn’t want to believe she was dead, it happened so fast. If only he had been there a few minutes sooner, she could have lived. He could have saved her. He hugged himself tightly and took a deep breath.
He slowly stepped closer to the coffin and looked at her, trying to remember her smiling face and beautiful blue eyes. Her soft blonde hair that would flow behind her as she ran with him through the trees of the forest behind their house. The warm sunlight against their skin as they enjoyed being teenagers together. The way she would run up and hug him after a long day of being apart due to school or work. The way her soft lips felt as she would kiss him. The times they were cuddling at home, enjoying a movie late at night. Or the way their hands fit perfectly together while they sat together, watching the sun set over the horizon.
Tears formed in his eyes, clouding his vision. He put his hand on her cheek, her skin cold to the touch. The tears began to roll down his face as he bent down and gently kissed her forehead, whispering softly, "Just wait, love…. I will see you again soon…”
That evening the news station was reporting what had happened.
It showed a woman, dressed in nice clothes sitting at a desk, looking down at her papers. She looked up and began to speak. "A Suspected Murder was caught after shooting a 18 year old of the name, Madeline Gold. Reporters say she saw the man attempting to lure a small group of children away and Madeline interfered. She was shot 3 times, and died at the scene."
(I know the news thing was bad, but it was mostly so people knew what happened to her and how she got injured)
