Beginning?
I slowly open my eyes. I'm lying on a bed. It's not a hospital bed, but it's not my bed at home either. I get up and pad down a hallway until I come to a dining room. My family sits at a table and eats bacon. Bacon? We never had bacon. It was forbidden - meat meant killing other creatures."What are you doing?" I ask.
Mother frowns. "Eating... why?"
I rub my head. "But- meat isn't allowed!"
Mother smiles. "You can be a vegetarian if you want, sweetie, but we'll eat meat, okay?"
"Miracle.. why aren't you at the doctor's office?" I ask tentatively.
"Who?" Mother asks. Father looks confused. I point to my sister.
"Stop fooling around, shrimp." Miracle says.
"Violence is wrong! No name-calling!" I cry. "And what's your name if not Miracle?"
Miracle makes a face. "Shut up and stop playing dumb."
I feel my cheeks grow warm. "You- you really don't remember?"
My family smiles. Father shakes his head. "Honey, you must have had some crazy dream last night!"
I shrug and go back to my room. Maybe I need more sleep. But there's a note on my pillow, reading, "Dear Hope, you made your request and I granted your wish. No one except you remembers the realms - or your past life. It's normal now. The entire population of the Earth is back - all those billions of people. And in case you're wondering, no, it wasn't a dream. Signed, Dr. Peters."
I smile. Is this the end? Is this it? My life is ended?
No, I decide. This is the beginning.
With a grin, I head out to the breakfast table and start eating, excited for my new life to begin.
