False Harmony

13 year old Hope lives in a futuristic world where everything is peaceful. War has been eliminated from the planet, everyone is equal, and the Earth is natural - or so it seems. When Hope gets gravely injured and lies in a coma at the hospital, she sees the master of all the realms and discovers why her realm is so peaceful. DISCLAIMER: I give credit for some ideas in this story (realms, the peaceful realm, etc.) to Veronica Roth! Divergent is the book that gave me the idea to write about realms. I do not mean in any way to copy the idea of Veronica's factions.

Discovery

Dr. Peters beams. "Glad it was kept secret so well," he says. "However, there is one girl - other than you - who knows something... you see, when you were born, your sister - Miracle, is it? - loved you so much. She took you everywhere with her. One day, she was taking a walk - with you strapped to her back - and she wondered what was behind the cliff. So she started to climb it. Of course, sirens rang out, and officials were alerted. By the time they arrived, she was at the top - looking straight at the metal wall that separates your realm from the next. When the experts got to her, they took her down. By the time they were down at the ledges, she was struggling so much that she snapped out of the harness strapping you to her back. And she fell all the way down into the water below. Which put her into a coma. Well, when she hit the water, the one thing she was thinking about was the metal wall. So when she fell into a coma, she learned about the wall."
I frown. "So, whatever one is thinking about when they fall into a coma, they learn about that exact thing during their coma?" I ask.
Dr. Peters gives a curt nod. "Precisely. When you fell into your coma, you were thinking about your sister. So that is who you are learning about." He pauses to ponder that. "Well, at least, you did learn about your sister after I went on and on about myself. Quite sorry."
I squint through the telescope. The five realms other than mine seem very dark and gloomy. No one is smiling. Everyone is pushing and fighting and yelling and crying. "What's this?" I ask Dr. Peters.
"Oh. Haha!" Dr. Peters chuckles. "I must have neglected to tell you WHY your realm is so peaceful."
My blood runs cold. "Why?"
Dr. Peters grins. "The realms had a bit of a- shall we say, problem. All of the people in all of the realms except for your realm began fighting with each other. They lost their happiness, so your realm gained happiness. The other realms realized they'd messed up, and they tried to get their happiness back, but your realm kept it."
I gulp. "If the happiness and peace of my realm is at the cost of other realms' happiness and peace, I- I don't want my realm to be happy and peaceful anymore!" I cry.
