Chapter 5
I never saw my mom after she left, but I had words with Jacob later.“Steel, she’s not trying to tell you you’re wrong to be angry at him,” he said. “She’s just trying to protect you!” I shook my head.
“SHE’S JUST TRYING TO PROTECT HIM!” I screamed. “I’M TIRED OF HER TELLING ME I’M WRONG!” A tear slipped down my cheek. “I thought you, of all people, would understand.” Jacob placed a hand on my shoulder, but I jerked away.
“I do understand, Steel.” I looked him in the eyes.
“No, you don’t. You’re always talking about wishing you knew him. I’m the one who has some common sense when it comes to our parents.” I scoffed. “You guys aren’t even willing to do what’s needed for the faunus.”
“Look, Steel, we want our rights just like every faunus in Menagerie,” he said. “But you’ve always been the one willing to act. We’re just not made for that, and you know it!” I scoffed again.
“Oh, please,” I said. “You aren’t even a faunus.” Jacob looked offended.
“Steel, I’m your brother!” he exclaimed. “I get everything you do!”
“You could leave any time you like! God knows you’re ‘not made for this’! YOU JUST GO ON AND LIVE IN ATLAS WITH ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD KILL ME WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT!!” Jacob was stunned into silence, but I didn’t regret my words.
“Steel . . . I may not be built for fighting, but I would never leave you, and you know it. Me and Mom are just trying to make sure you don’t do anything you’ll regret.” I shook my head and turned away. “For God’s sake, we’re your family.” I looked back at him and asked, “‘What family?” before walking out of the room.
Adam’s P.O.V.
As I arrived back at Menagerie and headed to Steel’s house, I was filled with anger towards Blake. I knocked on the door, and Steel opened it.
“Adam?” I nodded. “What’s wrong?” I shook his head.
“Not out here.” She nodded and walked inside. I followed her into her family’s living room. “Where’s your family?” She shrugged.
“Don’t know, really don’t care,” she said. “But thankfully they’re not here, so you should be good.” She sat down and looked me in the eye.
“What happened with your family?” She shook her head.
“It doesn’t matter. Now what’s going on?” I sat down and put my head in my hands.
“Blake’s gone,” I said after a while.
“You mean, like she-”
“She left.” I cut her off and took off my mask. “We never even finished the mission. I almost did, but she cut the connection between the engine and the rest of the cars.” She looked at the floor. “I don’t think she’s coming back.” Steel shook her head.
“She’d talked about leaving,” she said, “but I never thought she’d actually do it.” I shook my head. “Although . . . I think I might know where she’s going.” I looked at her.
“Where?” She smiled.
