To Love What is Lost
As dawn showed her rosy cheeks over the horizon, Sonata awoke, tangled in his sheets. He blinked and shuddered as he recalled the haunting dreams from the previous night. Sonata sat before his little fireplace and built up flames to furnacelike proportions, hoping that warming his body would somehow heal his soul. As he sat silently, he heard the door of his worn down shack creak. Cana entered the single room. She approached the young man and spoke softly."He's coming, Sonata." The white gowned princess extended a hand and stared into Sonata's eyes. It was like all the light had fled them, leaving dark and empty shells. He took her hand and his eyes closed in what might had been bliss, had he not been so broken inside. Without saying a word, Sonata gazed back into the flames.
Cana wasn't sure that she liked how he was staring at the fire. It was almost as if he was yearning to enter the fire and become the ash that fluttered in the air before resting once more among the cinders.
"It was this strange dream...There were so many I couldn't save. The children and the entire village..." Sonata's voice became less audible as his throat tightened.
"I couldn't even move as he took their lives, one by one...Among those lives was you."
Cana stared quietly, a slight sparkle of despair in her eyes.
"Cana, I...I don't think I will be able to care for anything, knowing that it can all be ripped away from me in an instant. I will never love anyone.
Cana gazed into his distant eyes. She held his hand and clutched it close to her own, screaming heart. For it was the only way she could let him know.
