Best Friend for Life

A few years back
my grampa died
but I remember his very last words,
"Take care of Riley,
he'll bring you good luck,
and tell him his old man'll miss him."
The curtain was pulled
my grampa died
but I kept those words in the back of my mind...
Mum surprised me
on Saturday morning
a few days after the bad news
and to my surprise
a Labrador sat
in the middle of the living room floor,
"This is Riley,
grampa's dog
remember the one he told you about?
You never really met him
he's a very shy dog
but he's a very friendly pup."
I hugged my mum
ran upstairs
with Riley trailing behind
I looked at him
right in his eyes
I knew he'd be my best friend forever...
3 years later
I'm reading this now
I am currently 14
Riley has Cancer
I am ever so sad
I'm waiting on results from the vet...
4 years have passed
I just remembered
what I had wrote in this diary
Riley's okay
thank goodness for that!
Riley has just turned 8!...
Later last night
while in my bed
Riley was in the corner of the room
whimpering aloud
crying for me
I thought it was only a dream...
When by the next morning
I found out the news
that Riley was above the clouds.
I told my mum
she wasn't surprised,
"Darling,
you should know by now,
that Riley was 12
a good old age
especially for a dog
now you shouldn't cry
you did nothing wrong
Riley's resting up in the sky..."
we buried my best friend
in the back garden
and payed for a marble gravestone,
it read-:
"Here lies Riley
2001-2013
Rest in peace Best Buddy"
I have kept my promise
I'll never break it
even when I'm old and grey
that Riley's my best friend
he will be til' the end
and nothing can ever change that...
