‘I hate myself. I lost everything- everything! - because of one stupid pilot and a missed opportunity. When they said it was an urgent call, I could have begged them. They would have given in soon enough. But no! I didn’t. All because of me, and some stupid plane..’Tears flowed down my cheeks as I remembered.
Remembered when I had heard about what happened.
Remembered myself fainting.
Remembered that, when I woke up, I had made the decision to kill myself.
But now, sitting in the back seat of Mrs. Jane’s car, I was still alive.
And I regretted it.
“Stop crying, Lisa.” Mrs. Jane barked, her glasses almost magnifying the cold, harsh glare she gave me. I hugged my knees close and sighed,
“It’s Lily, miss-”
“I don’t care. At least you’re in safe hands now.”
Sniffing, I looked outside the window and saw that we were pulling up in the drive of a huge building with lots of children standing in front of the entrance.
Pine Tree Care Home: my new place of residence. Delightful.
“Now, children.” snapped Mrs. Jane. “Say hello to our new….family member, Lily Beech.”
“Hello, Lily Beech. Nice to meet you.” all the children said in a monotone voice, as they shuddered, but
not at me; no, it was Mrs. Jane that scared them.
Poor guys.
Suddenly, the children ran back to whatever they were doing, Mrs. Jane following them.
“Alfie, stop that at once! Maggey, pick your feet up! ..What on earth are you doing, Harvey?!” she screamed at them, only making my fears worse. This new life would take some getting used to.
“Hey, new girl. How ya doing?”
Startled, I looked behind me- and gasped. A boy of around 16 looked down at me, his crop of blonde hair covering his eyes. Feeling my stomach do a backflip, I tried to speak- but no sound came out.
“Well, uh…you see…I…”
Merely laughing, he walked over to a bench and gestured for me to sit down, which I did. It was strange having someone being this kind to me. A stranger, no less.
“I’m Jonathan Fae. Nice to meet you!”
He stuck out his hand, and I don’t know why, but I took it.
“Me too. You know Mrs. Jane?”
“Um-hmm?”
“What does she do here?” I crossed my fingers desperately for a good answer.
“Oh, she’s the secretary, but she normally runs the place when Sammy’s not in. Acts like my old grandma, I say.”
I laughed weakly and smiled. She wouldn’t be here all the time.
“Who’s Sammy?” I asked, as Jonathan gave me a look of surprise.
“You don’t know? Sammy’s the boss around here. Yes, he’s very nice, but be warned- anything that puts anyone in danger will blow his top right out of the building. And,” he added, whispering, “he HATES planes and anything to do with them. Don’t mention it in front of the staff, okay?”
I nodded.
‘But…why planes?’ Suppressing the desire to ask why this was the case, I let Jonathan introduce himself. It felt like a century before he stopped talking.
“So, you ready to go inside, then? Seems like you want to look around.”
Walking into the hall of Pine Tree Care Homes, I realized something- this life would take some getting used to, but gaining a new friend in the process is worth the wait.
