The Bread
"What is it?"
"Do you even know what's in that stuff?"
I look at the toast. "It's just normal toast." I look at Jo's face. "Isn't it?"
"Not quite."
"And by that you mean...?"
"The Amity inject their bread with a chemical." Jo explains.
"What?!" I drop the toast and push my plate back. "What does the chemical do?!"
"Nothing bad." Jo assures me. "It just... well...."
"Just what?"
"It makes you go loony!" Lucy butts in. "You giggle and act all innocent-sweety-pants to everything! It's a pain in the butt."
"Seriously?" I ask. Jo nods. "Don't worry, it doesn't stay for long."
"Good! When will the effects start?"
"Tomorrow, most likely." Sam answers.
"Okay, lesson learned!" I say, tossing it in the trash.
"I would hope so!" Rob grins.
"Come on, they're calling us." Lucy says and we get up and go.
The rest of the day continues on smoothly. At night I hop into bed and switch off the light.
"G'night!"
"See you tomorrow!"
I yawn and drift off to sleep...
"Nera! NERA! WAKE UP!" Sam shakes me.
"Uhh....Uhhh?" I groan and flop onto the floor.
"Do I have to carry you?"
I giggle. I stand up shakily and slide on a jumper.
"Okay, let's go!"
"Go where?"
"To the others. They've been waiting for you for like half an hour!"
I laugh. "Okay, let's go!"
Sam looks at me. "Jo wasn't kidding about that bread thing." she mutters.
We go to the canteen where they were waiting.
"Hi guys! Isn't it a beautiful morning?"
Jo grins. "Told ya!"
"So we have to deal with THIS for a day?" Rob asks.
"Yep."
"Oh God, help me!" Lucy sighs jokingly.
"Come on you guys! You're so negative!" I laugh. "Come on, I'm gonna go get myself some of that toast!"
"So you can annoy us all over again? Nuh uh!" Sam smirks, pulling me back. "We need to do some chores!"
"Chores?" I groan disbelievingly.
"Come on, I may even teach you how to play a banjo!" Rob grins.
"Really?"
"Yeah! Let's go!"
By afternoon the dreaded Bread Affect (as Sam had jokingly named it) had worn off.
"Woo, am I glad that's over!" Rob leans against a wall.
"Yeah, I never want to go through with that EVER again!" Lucy laughs.
"Hey, it wasn't THAT bad, was it?" I ask.
"YES!" they all chorus.
"Okay, okay, maybe it was!" I grin.
"Ok, guys, we need to go to bed. Remember, it's Simulation day tomorrow!"
"Aww!!" I groan. "Fine!" I get into my pjs and hop into bed.
Just before Jo switches off the light, she turns to me and smiles.
"Nera, just one more thing."
"Yeah, what's that?"
"Next morning, try having cornflakes instead."
