The Orchard
I feel the train start to slow. I lean out the sliding door and see that the train is approaching a farm. The wind rushes into my face and I lean out further, savouring it. I breathe in deep and then reluctantly pull myself back in."We're almost there." I announce as I sit down on one of the velvet seats. "Hey, Jo, what are Amity headquarters actually called?"
"Well, we just call it the Orchard," Jo replies from where she's sitting. "Some call it the Peace Garden, but I personally think that's a hippy term."
"Jo, everyone in Amity is a hippy." Rob laughs and Jo tries to kick him from where she's sitting. She misses and that makes Rob laugh harder. Jo grins.
"Hey," Alena comes over to me and sits down next to me. "How's it going?"
"Okay." I answer.
"What did you get on your aptitude test?" she asks suddenly. I freeze.
"Amity." I say stiffly. That is not the truth. But I don't want to tell her what I got because it is dangerous.
My aptitude test results were unconfirmed. My tester, Tori, told me it was something called, 'Divergent,' and it could get me killed. It meant that my results couldn't be summarised, that my actions showed I could into more than one faction. I am able to fit into two; Dauntless and Amity. My Divergence is not as strong as most people's, she said, but I should still be cautious.
Alena narrows her eyes. "You're lying." she growls. "I can tell."
I do not look into her eyes, but thankfully at that moment the train squeals and stops. I quickly stand up and jump out, grateful. When I hit the ground I stop and stare. All around me there is trees, grass, sunshine, beauty. I see a pack of Amity girls and boys playing and stuffing around. There are slim long apple trees and banana trees everywhere, and I can see a greenhouse. Up ahead, I can also see a church-shaped building, but made of wood.
"What's that wood structure called?" I ask Jo, as we walk along.
"It's the Ranch." answers Jo. "Where we eat and sleep."
"It looks awesome!"
Jo smiles. "You're in for a tough time."
"Why?"
"Initiation is hard. You have to go through a landscape, kind of like the fear landscape the Dauntless use."
"Oh?" I bite my lip. I don't like to be reminded of the fear landscapes.
Jo sees my expression and smirks. "Don't worry, it's nothing to do with your fears. Everyone goes through the same landscape and there is a series of complications that you have to solve."
"Like what?"
"Well, they will have changed the simulation, but one of the problems was a little girl bleeding on the sidewalk and there is no phone available."
I shiver. "What did you do?"
"Can't remember." Jo finishes. We are approaching the Ranch, and I can see now that it has colourful stained windows with apples and the peace sign and things.
There are great wooden doors at the front and Jo goes up and pushes on them. They swing open. We go in and I see that there is a long table in the middle of the room, where everyone eats together. The floors have fancy parquetry designs on them, and as we walk across them they make a squeaking sound. Jo and I find Sam and the others and sit down next to them. There are people coming to serve us, laying out the table.
"You're new here, right?" a girl asks me as she gives me a plate.
"Yeah."
"Well, let me tell you, Dauntless," she pauses and grins. "This is going to be one hell of a year!"
