Amity
I do not look into Marcus's eyes as I give him the knife. I shuffle down the steps and turn toward Dauntless, toward black, where I belong. Then I realise I'm in Amity now. That thought makes me feel sick.I walk over to the Amity sector and sit next to a girl with reddish-brown hair and glasses. Obviously an Erudite transfer. Something about her looks inviting, so I fall down next to her.
I wait dazedly until Marcus reads out the last name. Then I stand up with all the other Amity as we go.
As we stroll down the corridor, the redhead smiles at me.
"Hey," she says conversationally.
"Hi." I smile back. "What's your name?"
"Samantha, but call me Sam. Yours?"
"Neralia."
"Cool."
We are pushed forward by something. It is the Dauntless. I look at them, wild and savage, and suddenly I am glad I chose Amity.
"Hey, what's that?" asks Sam. She is pointing to one of my tattoos. It is my only one, the one on my left hand. It hurt a lot and took months to heal, which is why I never got another one.
"A tattoo." I reply.
"What of?"
I blush. "It's a swallow." I answer.
"Hmm...fascinating!" she says, studying it. "Meant to bring good luck, yes?"
"Your Erudite is already starting to shine through!" I tease, and she punches me playfully.
We all crowd into the elevator and Johanna - the Amity leader - pushes the Ground Floor button. I feel the jolt of the elevator as we go down. Then she turns to address us.
"Initiates, welcome to Amity. I am Johanna, leader of the Amity. You are now one of us, and you will abide by the rule of the Amity. We keep the peace in the city walls. For former Amity, please insure that all the new initiates are comfortable."
The elevator doors slide open and we all depart. As we go through the doors, I remember that just one hour ago I was here, worried about the choice I would be making.
We surge toward the trains, and one stops and everyone gets on. I am just about to lift myself into a carriage when it starts moving.
"Hey! Wait up!" I yell, but then I realize no one can hear me. This is where my Dauntless comes in handy, I think as I run along side the train and easily pull myself in.
"Hey, what are you doing here, Dauntless?" Sam jokes, and I grin at her. "That was a close one!"
There are four other people in my compartment; a tall girl with short brown hair, kind of in a longish bob. She is a Candor transfer. There is also an Erudite boy, and the other two are Amity girls, staying on. One of the Amity girls comes toward me and shakes my hand.
"Hey, welcome to Amity, Dauntless. I'm Jo."
"Neralia." I answer.
"Hmm... Neralia. Ever thought of changing that?"
"What do you mean?" I ask, confused.
"Well," she sits down on the floor. "Neralia isn't an Amity name. We tend to be more open and friendly."
"And by that you mean?"
"Listen, I'll get straight to the point. How about you shorten it to suit your faction?"
"Shorten it?" I take a step back.
"Yeah, to a more Amity-ish name. How about...Nera?" Jo suggests.
"Hmm...Yeah, I like it!" the Erudite boy pipes up.
"Same." says the Candor girl.
"Well...." I hesitate, turning to Sam. "What do you think?"
"I think it's good." she replies, and straightens up. "If it's ok with you."
I nod. "Okay, Nera it is then."
"Cool." Jo says brightly. "So, is anyone going to introduce themselves now that we have?"
"Sorry, I'm Robert, AKA Rob." the Erudite boy announces.
"And I'm Alena." says the Candor girl.
"That's Lucy, my sister," Jo says to me, pointing to the other Amity girl. "Hey, Luce, come here!"
I laugh, not because anything's funny, or because something is causing me to, but because I am so happy to be here, to be in Amity, where I belong.
