Chapter 2
When Dean woke the next day, Cas was as he was for the past week he'd been there. Then all of a sudden Cas coughed, his body wracking with the strain, and another, it seemed as if he was trying to expel all the breath from his lungs, Dean jolted awake from half-asleep to wide awake and slammed the call button. Tessa bolted in and pushed Dean out of the room to make way for doctors. After which he made way to the waiting room. He flipped through a magazine absently while his mind was on Cas. Nurses came and went out of the room but it was less of a hubbub. He couldn't read their faces, and couldn't help but worry about what might be going on with Cas. He looked up and saw Sam and Jess taping visitor badges on their lapels and he flagged them over. Sam glanced over at the hallway were Cas's room was but made his way to Dean through professional sick people and the elderly with their IV poles tailing behind them like dogs. Sam plopped down in a seat next to Dean and Jess found a nurse to talk to, looking for facts about Cas. Sometimes Dean thought that maybe she loved Cas as much as he did."So why are you out here Dean?"
"I don't know man, Cas just started coughing really bad and Tes chased me out."
Sam sighed and they just sat for awhile, Dean staring into a space beyond Sam's head. Tessa walked into the room with a massive grin on her face.
"Dean," she looked at Sam, "Good Sam, you're here too! I have wonderful news about Cas!"
Dean sat up in his chair a little and let a corner of his mouth turn up a little, his first smile in months.
"What is it?" Sam asked, also with a smile, but probably not such a rare occurrence with him. By this time Jess was standing next to him.
"The coughing was his body rejecting the air we were forcing in and out of his lungs with the ventilator! We're putting in a cannula today!"
Dean was full on grinning now, "That's great! Any other news?"
"Even better!" Tessa exclaimed, truly excited for this. "He's awake! And he called for you!"
Sam was speechless, he didn't come to the hospital very often, he had to study for graduating college soon but Dean often filled him in on details, Cas had not spoken since Dean had gotten there and even him waking up was a rare thing. Dean got up and nearly ran to Cas's room.
He had these little nubbin things in his nose that Dean guessed was the cannula that Tes was talking about. He was staring ahead at the wall until Dean cleared his throat. Cas's head turned toward the noise and Dean saw that grin that he had been thinking about for almost 3 years.
"Dean." he said, his voice rasping from disuse. Dean rushed forward and kneeled by the bed. Tessa loomed over them.
"He asked for you by name, Dean." she told him. He smiled, he didn't care that Cas was still in the hospital bed, his doctor would live.
