Why me God, why me?
That night, before I went to sleep, I prayed for Kaiser, and all of the other soldiers that he would be helping. He was in the corner of the room, sighing and licking his lips. I was just about to go to sleep when I heard Kaiser whimpering. I lit my lantern up and stumbled through the darkness, following the glimmer of light, "Oh Kaiser, having a bad night are-" as I was about to pet him, he snapped! I backed away in fear and decided to go to sleep. I spent about an hour crying as I had never seen my lovely dog do this. But that wasn't all, it got worse. "Aroo! Ar-ar-aroooo!" he howled, with a few whines in between. Then I heard flimsy footsteps walking across the landing, "Anjelica," yawned my mama, rubbing her weary eyes, "why is Kaiser making these noises?" she saw the tears swelling up in my eyes, "Mama," I said running over to her, "Kaiser snapped at me, I don't know what is wrong with him, really! He is never like this mama, what are we going to do." my mama put her hand on my shoulder, "Dear, you sleep in my bed tonight, yes? I will look after Kaiser, no worries, he'll be better by morning. Now go on, it is very late." she shooed me out of the room before I had time to say goodnight to Kaiser. I went straight into mama's bedroom and fell asleep. The next morning, I was expecting Kaiser's face right up at mine, but I had forgotten that I was in mama's room. I had to get my uniform from my room, so I'd be able to see Kaiser. "Kaiser," I whispered sweetly, but he did not come, he wasn't there. I got dressed and decided to go around the rooms upstairs; middle room, mama's room, bathroom! Guest room, I said the same thing in everyone of them, expecting Kaiser to jump out, but to no avail..
"Mama, where is Kaiser? I can't...Where is he mama, how was he last night?" mama was sitting at the kitchen table, patting the seat beside her, "Come," she said, swallowing her tea, "take a seat darling. Now, last night, unfortunately, Kaiser did not get any better, you mustn't have heard his barks as you were sound asleep, but I needed to take him to the vet this morning, so I will send a note into Mrs Schwarz tomorrow, we are going to see Kaiser, there is too much to explain now. Put on your normal clothes for now." I didn't know what she was talking about, but I did as she said. I came back downstairs and then straight outside into a black taxi.
"So Anjelica," my mama said, fixing her seat belt, "I need to be honest with you, you are 12 now, you know? But anyway dear, Kaiser has what they call a brain tumor, it means that-" "I know mama, I know." she smiled nervously, "But, er...Dear, Dr Wolf said that Kaiser is too young for an operation to stop this tumor, and he said that, well..Kaiser may have to be put to sleep." I looked out the window immediately, trying to hide my tears. "Anjelica dear-" "I am okay mama, just a little shocked, like anyone would be if they were told that there dog was going to be killed." my mama probably had so many excuses and dotes to throw at me, but she knew that if she talked, she'd make things worse than they were.
When we got to the Veterinary, we walked up to the desk, "Excuse me Dr Wolf," said my mama kindly, "we are here to see Kaiser, our dog." grumpy old Mr Wolf looked at my mama, then down at me, as if I were a peasant, "Sind Sie sicher, dass Sie möchten, dass Ihre Tochter möchte ihn sehen?" asked Mr Wolf, poking in his glasses. My mama nodded. I didn't know what he had said as I spoke mostly English at home, but I knew basic German language. We walked into the damp, smelly room. There I saw a couple of cats and their kittens, a Scottish Terrier and then 2 German Shepherds. I saw an angry, snarling German Shepherd, of which I was scared of, but I knew that I had nothing to worry about as the German Shepherd on the other side was mine, I was about to run over to it when, "Not so fast young lady," Mr Wolf grabbed my arm and led me over to the scary dog. His mouth was dripping of saliva, his eyes as dark as the night sky and his teeth were always showing, "Kaiser? Is this-is this you?" I tried slipping my fingers through the slots in the cage, but the fierce dog just growled. I backed away in fear and sorrow, shaking my head, "This is not my dog mama, this is not Kaiser! What happened to my little emperor? He was never like this, was he? Oh mama!" I bumped into her and she kept me there. We both looked at what seemed to be our dog in horror, "I am so sorry," said my mama, "but this is what a brain tumor does to you darling, well, it won't do this to you, but look what it's done to Kaiser...Come on dear, taxi's waiting." I was rushed out of the basement-like room and shoved into the taxi, I couldn't help but do anything else than cry.
