The unforgettable year
Kaiser was the best thing that ever happened to me. He had turned my life around completely, he was so cute and intelligent, so fluffy and innocent! My mother and father told me that I should train him while he was young, so I taught him a few easy tricks first-sit, lie down, roll o'er, paw and those were the basics. I did a little dog show for my family, they said he was so clever and that I had him well trained, but we both knew it wasn't I who had made him this clever, he had a special ability at only 3 months old!I decided that when he was 6 months, I'd start taking him out to the fields, and when he got to that age, mother made a leather collar from father's old jacket and we bought a chain for a lead. I don't know what it was about the field, but I felt like I could escape from the world there, and I think Kaiser did too. The first time we went, I remember I was very sad, it was the year 1939 you see, Hitler had declared war, I was heartbroken, other boys and girls my age wouldn't have had a care, but I knew what the consequences were, war was deceitful and greedy, the two worst things in life. But as I said, the field was a place to escape from worries, so ran free and Kaiser ran with me along the flowery long grass! We rolled down the hills, ran about, had a picnic of jam and wheaten bread then played a bit more. But Sadly, it started raining and the grass was all wet and muddy. We decided to head back home, and well, I thought I'd take the shortcut through the tree's that were only a minute away. We were out of the rain and under a shelter, I took my cardigan off, wrapped it around Kaiser and decided to carry him. All seemed normal when all of a sudden I started hearing bee's! But bee's die when it rains, I thought. Then it hit me, I started to run, faster, faster, faster and faster til' I got home, I wouldn't stop, I wanted to be with my family when it started. World War 2 had just begun.
