Getting Ready For Ability Testing (Wednesday)
"Are you okay?" He asks."What? Yeah, I mean, why?" I stammer.
"You were spacing off, you didn't hear me." His concerned gaze stares at me and I look away.
"Uh, yeah. I'm good, sorry. What did you say?" I was actually trying to cover up my blush. I mean I am the one here with this super cute boy, who is going to test my *abilities*. Not Alice for once. But it isn't like I can go home and tell them that I'm with him. Alice would probably make him fall in love with her in an instant. He would forget about me. Anyways, my mom and sister think I am at Reilly's house studying for our Spanish test for tomorrow. I should probably ask him if I can tell anybody...
"I said, let's drag these tires in between First and Second Bases."
I help him grab more old tires and we set them into 2 columns going from first to second base, one line slightly ahead of the other. There must of been 20 tires. Then we went back for some bright orange cones, like the ones they use for obstacle courses. That's when it hits me. I'm either going to being tested on either brute strength, speed, or endurance. I'm not strong, people can put their palm on my biceps, and still touch their middle finger to their thumb all around my arm. I'm not fast, I think I run a 100 meters in like 20 seconds (terrible). But endurance. I have that. My PR in Cross Country is a sub 18 minutes. Almost qualified for State last year with that time. We place the cones from Second to Third Base, we placed them randomly, sometimes 20 feet apart, other 4 feet apart, there were about 10 cones total.
We did this almost silently.
"So, uh, is this a test?" I asked as we stood up to look up at the cones and tires we had placed.
He softly laughed and shook his head.
"No, this is kind of like a base evaluation. We will meet here once twice week to see if you are getting better."
"Won't I not get better if I only do this twice a week?" I asked.
"Well, you wouldn't normally, but paired up with you running every night, we figure twice a week would be plenty," He explained. "Usually we ask new recruits to meet up with a MUTTS member up to 5 times a week to train them. But you are all ready training basically."
"So, I'm going to come here twice a week to get better...better at what, exactly?" I wondered.
"Strength, Speed, Agility, Stealthiness, and Endurance."
"Oh. Well, what happens if I'm not good enough for any of them?" I was worried now.
"Oh, don't worry, we will be spending loads of time together making sure you pass the final test." He said it with a grin. He was flirting! With ME! Of all people!
I could only smile weakly because I was afraid if I said anything out loud, it would come out in a gushy giggle.
We walked over to Home plate, and he pulled out a stopwatch, pen, and small notepad from his truck.
"So, you are going to sprint to first, the put a foot in each tire quickly, moving your way to second base. Then you will sprint to third base while going to each cone and touching the ground next to it, going to the next cone, back and forth. When you reach third base, you will sprint to home, do 20 sit ups, and do it again. The harder and more consistent you work, the longer of a break you get. Are you ready?" He asked, he was all business, until he said *are you ready*.
For some reason I trusted this random, cute boy. I nodded my head.
"Ready as I'll ever be." I looked into his eyes and held his gaze for a few seconds. I smiled, and started to take my place at home plate, ready to run as if I hadn't all ready ran 3 miles just 2 hours ago.
