The Robbers
The people gasped and I cooed "Now, my dears, we must ride this instant to these robbers and tell them our business." They stood motionless wide-eyed like startled statues. "We have no time to lose! Go!" At that, they dispersed quickly gathering their horses and weapons. When they returned their glazed gazes had turned to stony glares."We are ready, M'lady. I brought you a horse if you cared to come." A man came forward holding the reins of a grey mare.
I chuckled "Sir you need not give me a horse. I have my own." He looked to the still disguised horse behind me. He opened his mouth to protest but I interrupted, "There is no need to doubt my steed, she may look frail but looks are deceiving." I smiled at his uncomfortable expression. "I appreciate your graciousness but we will ride our own horses into battle." He nodded and disappeared into the crowd. I turned to the rest of the men before me. "Go and win back your mountain!" I thrust my fist into the air and the men charged forth. Pounding hooves made a ringing din that the whole nation could probably hear. The Mountain Pass was not far and we arrived quickly to find a barricade guarded by four men. "Thieves, return our pass or face our wrath!" I called out from the back of the group. We were not a large or particularly threatening group but with myself here there was no reason to fear such feeble robbers.
"Your wrath? I would be sooner more terrified of a woman's wrath!"
"And that you shall receive too if you do not relinquish your hold on this route."
"Is that a challenge I hear?" A voice of thunder reverberated off the rocky cliffs. "Why, it is! What do you farming men challenge me for!" A man as big as a bear and ugly as a boar appeared from behind the barricade.
"Scoundrel, give us back our land!" I said using a little spell to make my voice as loud and rough as his.
"And a woman is the one challenging me! Do you need a woman to speak for you?" He laughed a laugh of grinding stones that hurt the ears and the faith. "I am not afraid of gutless men!" At the word 'gutless' the men before me shot at the felon. Not much of a battle came out of it nor magic for their horses easily crushed the robbers and their barricade. I merely watched as the before placid men dragged the bear-man before me.
"Should we kill 'im?" asked a man with blood on his cheek.
"Death is too kind for such a treacherous man. I shall make an example out of him to all thieves who try to terrorize my city." I paused to see their expressions as I stole this city from them as these robbers had stolen their path. There was no blink at the word 'my' which indicated they had come to the conclusion before I. With a new passion I said "The law stands firm and punishment is needed. Felon, give me your hands." His battered hands raised to mine. "Every time something of value touches your hands, your hands will burn with the heat of a thousand suns!" The people around me stared. "Release him and let him tell the world of your victory." The men released him slowly and he rose before me. He hand flew towards me but I had easily anticipated this reaction and faster than his blow I had dodged and placed a silver coin on his hand. The wail of a banshee leaped off his lips and he held out his hands which sizzled and blistered before our eyes. Then in one swift move, I drove my foot into his thick chest shoving him over. He writhed on the floor as crusty tears carved canals in his dirt covered face. "We shall not be threatened by his kind anymore."
