The Arrow of Artemis

The Arrow of Artemis

My name is Sylvia Goldberg. I go to a special camp in New York called Camp Half Blood. I'm a daughter of Hades, even though I don't look like one with my bright blonde hair and olive skin tone. I became a Huntress about two months ago. But a few things have been bothering me. First of all, the new quest coming up. I'm not going to be with the other Huntresses. Second of all, this new son of Hephaestus named Michael. There's more but those two are most annoying.

My name is Sylvia Goldberg, and I became a Huntress for Artemis 24 hours ago.

I shake my head in confusion. "Mom, what are you talking about?" She smiles sadly down at me. I feel tiny sitting on the small stool with my mom hovering over me.

"Sylvia, Harry isn't your father." she starts slowly. "Someone else is." I squeeze my eyes shut. How could the dad that raised me; from teaching me how to ride a bike to blowing bubbles when I was five; not be my dad?

I look up and glance over at my dad. "Is it true?" I whisper, but it comes out more like a soft whimper. He gives me the same sad smile mom gave me. I run to our couch and bury my head in a pillow to stop my crying.

"Sylvia, honey. If you want, we could take you to meet your real father." Harry suggests. I look up and wipe tears from my cheeks. My mom's face gets a worried expression, but I don't pay attention to that. "You would take me?" I ask my Fake Dad. He smiles and nods.

I take my time getting off of the sofa and putting the wet pillow down. I sniffle and wipe some more tears away. I trudge past my mom to get to my bedroom across the hall.

I take a deep breath, and my breath is shaky. I get dressed and brush my hair in silence. I come out of our bathroom to see my mom waiting for me outside the door. She makes a motion with her hand that says 'Come here.' I walk towards her and we go into her room.

"I'm sorry, sweetie. And I want to say sorry in advance." I tilt my head. "Why are apologizing in advance?" She smiles and gently brushes strands of my hair away from my eyes. Her hands are warm. "I'm saying that because you might not believe who your dad is. But mostly I apologized because you might not like who your dad is."

And the curiosity strikes. "Was he a crook? Is he in jail? Was he in jail? Is he mean? Can he be mean?" My mom laughs and hugs me. "No, no, no, no, yes." she answers. "How can he be mean?" She takes a deep breath. "When you meet him, you'll find out, sweetie. I promise." She kisses my forehead and leaves me sitting alone in her room.
