Coconuts
It was the third day. Kate was sitting on the beach near Sally's grave. Sighing she looked out onto the ocean. It was rather calm, with low tide and only a few small waves. Kate's stomach growled. She hadn't eaten since she was on the yacht. They had food, she just never took any. A pink tinted seashell gleamed on the sand. She looked at it. 'Sally loved seashells...'"Hiya Kate!" someone spoke, startling her. She wheeled around to see Fiona and her sister, Mackenzie, behind her. Kate let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh, it's just you two." She became angry at herself. She had the same nightmare that day, it must be what was causing her to be so jumpy. "So, how are you two doing?"
"We're just fine, thanks!" Fiona replied with a smile. Kate sighed and turned back to the sea. 'It's weird,' she thought to herself, 'you can get bored even when you're stranded.' Mackenzie looked at the shining seashell, her face lit up with glee.
"Look!" She said, "It's pink! It's so pretty!" She ran up to it and picked it up. The girl held it in her hand, examining it. "See Fiona?" She held it out for her twin to see.
"yeah!" Fiona gently touched the treasure and smiled. "Come on! Let's go and show it to Big Brother!"
"Ok!" The two of them ran off, back into the plant growth. Kate's stomach growled again, and her eyes landed on a coconut tree nearby. 'I could eat a coconut...' She got up and approached the tree. It was about twice as tall as her, and there were coconuts at the very top. She sighed. 'I've never been good at tree climbing.' The girl looked up at them, yearningly. She took a deep breathe and grabbed onto the tree. She began to heave herself up, but then fell when she was only a few feet off the ground. Sighing, she got up and tried again.
It took Kate several tries to finally get to the top and grab one of the large seeds. She sat down and caught her breathe. "I really do suck at climbing trees." She said to herself. She looked at the coconut. 'Now to open it....' The hungry girl first tried hitting it against the cliff. She smashed it into the stone several times, but it didn't break. She then tried hitting it with a large rock. That didn't work either. Finally, she just bit it as hard as she could without thinking. It hurt, and nothing else happened. Kate sighed inwardly and began to knaw on the brown shell. After a while, she stopped, for a moment. She then bit it as hard as she could again. The coconut cracked in half. She was shocked at herself, but then smiled and began to sip the liquid that hadn't spilled.
This gave her an idea. 'We may not get off here for a while,' she thought, 'so we'll need extra survival skills. Maybe if I strengthen my teeth up enough, opening coconuts will be a breeze!' So every day, when she got the chance, she would chew on coconut shells, hoping to make her teeth stronger.
