Odd number
Don't you hate it when you're in a class, that you don't particularly have any friends in and the teacher asks you to get into pairs? I do. It happens to me all the time! Well it did. If it had not happened though, I would not have met Ben."Everyone I want you to get into pairs" said Mrs Marlena. Already most of the girls were looking at each other, working out who would go with who. There was a new kid in the class today. He was tall, with floppy hair and a cute smile. His eyes were a brilliant shade of green and his hair a light brown. I wasn't paying any attention to him of course, he hadn't even crossed my mind. "But don't move yet. Once you are in pairs I would like to have both of you tell the other something that they may not know about you and then I will ask each of you what the other person said." The whole classed groaned. I swear this same exercise was repeated every single second of my schooling, ok that's an exaggeration but we did do this a lot.
The class got into pairs, well all except me. The new boy was doing a revision test in the corner of the class so there was an odd number. I was praying that the teacher would not do the thing that most teachers do and say that I have to go with them. She didn't. She looked over at the new boy and pointed. "You can go with him once he is done."
So my first day of semester could have been worse. At least I had someone to work with. No matter if I didn't know who they were.
After a few minutes the new boy stopped working and handed his test in. He was told to come and sit with me. "Hey" I said putting a don't know what to say now, this is already awkward smile. The boy didn't speak. He just sat down and smiled. This was already SO awkward. Nobody was speaking. Thankfully I'm not completely socially deprived. I knew how to save a conversation. "Don't you hate it when there's an odd number of people in a class, and you're new and you have to work with some random, ugly girl because you don't know anyone else?" I tried to smile. It was meant to be a joke and I was sincerely hoping he would get it and not say what he said next. "Yeah I really do." I was shocked. That was mean, really mean. This boy who I had been talking to for less than a minute had already offended me and I already disliked him. This conversation was going well! "I'm just glad that didn't happen today" he said smiling. Relief spread over me like a thick blanket. It was all okay. He wasn't mean, I didn't dislike him, he didn't hate me, it was all under control.
"I was almost going to leave that last bit out because your facial expression was priceless!" He laughed. I didn't know how to react. I think I awkwardly laughed too. "I'm sorry" he said genuinely. "I'm terrible at making friends. My name's Ben, what's yours?" The boy said. I was a little taken back by this boy. He played with my emotions as though they were a toy but for some reason it was drawing me in. "I'm Kayla" I said, smiling sweetly. And that was that. Our simple first meeting.
