Stares
I came out of the nurses office with nothing but a bandage around my hand from where I scraped it and a headache. Unfortunately, the visit didn't last long enough to get me out of any classes, so I went to Calculus. Fun-right?As I entered Ms. Frithers room, all eyes were on me. Kay and May, the stuck up twins, whispered to each other and chuckled. Mike Wilkes nudged his buddy Paul and they both had a knowing smile on their face. The other kids were either whispering or laughing about something too.
My face turned red as I took my seat at the back of the classroom. I am invisible, I am not here, I am invisible, I am not here, I am invisible... I repeated this in my head until I started believing it myself. I took out my notebook and started doodleing, praying nobody was looking at me. I snuck a glance around me. Class had turned back to normal, nobody was looking at me. I sighed in relief and continued drawing a flower.
Class went by miserably slow. I looked up at the clock, only fifteen minutes to go. I stared up at Ms. Frithers who was trying to explain something to Tommy Marshall, but obviously he just wasn't getting it. May leaned over to Kay, handing her a folded up piece of notebook paper. Kay giggled as she read it, then turned around to look at me. She laughed again, wrote something down on the paper, and handed it back to May.
I felt like I was going to throw up. All these stares and whispers and notes were driving me crazy. What did I do? I was pushed down, get over it.
The bell went off, and I rushed out before any one could notice I was gone. I ran up the stairs into the bathroom, nobody uses this one because the stall doors had been taken down to be replaced. I threw my book bag on the ground beside me. I ran cold water over my hands and just let the water run. I looked into the mirror at my dirty blonde hair that hung just below my shoulders. It was wavy and I didn't own a flat iron, so there was nothing I could do about it. I had freckles that stretched from one cheek to the other, running over my nose. My body... was not super model material in any case. I was skinny, not stick thin, but more of a normal skinny. And my chest wasn't the largest. The only thing I liked about me were my eyes. They were dark brown, like chocolate. Chocolate is something I love and always will love. Unlike people, chocolate doesn't judge you or make fun of you. It's just there to taste good and comfort you when your in a bad mood. They were the same color as my older sister Teresa's eyes too. But I haven't seen her in four years since when I was thirteen.
I took some deep breaths, turned off the water and went out to face the rest of the day.
