What's public school like? Specifically, what's the American public high school system like? What's the best thing about it? What's the worst thing about it? How much homework is usually assigned? Is the workload realistic? I hear a lot about American public schools, most of what I hear being horror stories, and I'm just wondering what it's really like.

High school- NEARLY THERE BUT IDK
Best part- Food
Worst part- The main source of early depression that strikes perfectly happy, innocent, children.
Homework- Up until state tests, unless you're in a GT class basically leftover work from that day.
Workload- Not supposed to be possible for an average mental cabability.

AHAHAHAHHHAH
It's utter hell
Just simplifying that
And a bunch of homework actually and it's just stressful for most teenagers

For me, it was quite the mixture..the best thing for me was usually the teachers....though drama was rampant, along with relationships that took things too far. The worst thing usually is the amount of people in it, and the fact they're forced to go, even when they don't want to (This leads to civil unrest and such). The homework load is dependant on the teacher, but usually consists of a lot of math, science, and english homework. Not to mention the electives and out of school See More activities that also require your attention. Some parts of the school are the fact people categorize others into social stigmas, often forming blockades towards those not of their stigma, while creating lasting rickety bridges with those of the same class.

Meh, it's okay. My high school isn't the traditional high school with jocks and nerds and stuff, we're pretty accepting and that's a plus. The workload is pretty big, but it's enough to deal with, so I believe it's a reasonable amount. Because I enrolled myself in a shitton of Honors programs, I usually get in-class essays and projects every week, which actually isn't as bad as it seems. The worst thing about it is that you're expected to learn on your own because the teachers See More sometimes don't teach. It's supposed to be a transition into college, so it's appropriate that the high schools do that. But yeah, a lot of what is said about the high school systems here is exaggerated.

Depends on the government manning them really.
Brasil's government sucks so: loads of free periods, stupidity everywhere, future-less children, disrespect, teachers who don't give a duck, hopeless relationships...
Worst school I ever went to.
(The government actively steals from the public reserves... Just recently, they managed to sneak away over 30 billion into their own accounts. Corrupted as hell, they are. And they've got the nerve to say that we will have to work even See More more for the sake of our rapidly decreasing public vault money...)

High school sucks, I'm a freshman, next month is the end of the year and basically if you fail 1 class your screwed for the rest of your years at the hell hole. People everywhere making bad decisions and dear god don't get me started on the homework or food. It's one of the many reasons my psychiatrist diagnosed me with depression and low self esteem. I can't wait till its over
