There is some dispute between what a 'ghost' actually is. Some think ghosts are merely energy imprints left from deceased people, but are not actually conscious. Others think ghosts are humans stuck in limbo after they have died, meaning they are not longer alive but haven't passed on to the afterlife. Even in this category, there are still some disagreements. Ghosts can linger in residual hauntings, when something traumatic happens in their lifetime so they linger on earth (the most common type of haunting), vengeful haunting, when they want to get revenge (usually bad ghosts), a haunting where the ghost feels they need to fulfill something, and/or intelligent hauntings, wherein the ghosts can interact with its senses. It is commonly believed, however, that all ghosts keep their living personality.

Good ghosts generally don't harm people, so they are usually not a connotation of a haunting. However, they do haunt things, sometimes people. In the case of haunting people, it's usually to protect them if you are in fact a good ghost. Good ghosts can take part in any type of haunting, but are rarely involved in vengeful hauntings.
In residual hauntings, good ghosts may linger to warn others of what happened to them, or to remain a legacy. Maybe they don't want to pass on. In vengeful hauntings, good ghosts may want to harm something bad, still classifying them as 'good,' or get rid of a bad person. In a haunting where they want to fulfill something, a good ghost could fulfill their wish by protecting someone (which is highly associated with good ghosts) or finish another goal. After completion, ghosts usually pass on to the afterlife. In intelligent hauntings, almost anything could be the case, but as you are a good ghost, the intentions would most likely be good as well.
