The wage gap doesn't exist in the Western part of the world. Your male coworker and yourself will not be in the same rank with you getting less or him getting more than you. Take more hours and work overtime if you want more money.
That said, something MUCH more common and worth discussing is the fact that males do tend to be purposefully placed at a higher rank than their female coworkers.
