I grew up with Pokemon red green blue and yellow, but o personally prefer gold. I like the art style, and it is a direct sequel to gen 1. The game itself continues in the team rocket timeline. You play as Ethan (who most know as either Gold or Jimmy) and as you progress, you can find yourself battling the gen 1 protagonist, Red.
