Fruits of Choosing
I spread my bright, golden wings and flapped them nervously. Shine Of Purple Lilac had chosen a strawberry. As she pecked it apart, she found a dull green seed nestled inside. She fluffed her feathers with joy and nervousness, and flapped over to the Fruit Gatherers branch. A deep orange parrot greeted her with the traditional beak rub. Which position would I get? Scouter would be great; soaring over the rainforest, looking out for trouble. Fruit Gatherer is See More okay too, Shine Of Purple Lilac would be there with me. And the unthinkable... the Sacrifice. One who gives themselves up when the Grounders come with their long, thin, featherless wings and trap a parrot in a horrible nest of unbreakable vines. That would be terrible.
Mango or blackberry. I am second to last, with only two fruits to choose from. Mango or blackberry. I took of deep breath and reached for the dark, promising berry. Bit by bit I slowly nibble away, stretching the moment out for and eternity. I close my eyes as I bite away the last tiny black sphere before the center bed is revealed. I hear gasps of outrage and shock, and suddenly want the safety of my oblivion to last forever. I slowly open my eyes, and shut then again, afraid to fully face the reality of the situation. By in my fleeting glimpse, I saw a color. Blood red. The Sacrifice.
