Katherine is even older than Damon and Stefan LOL, but how she got that far was because of her sheer will to live. Yes, you could consider her selfish, but she has endured a lot and would rather not have friends. When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose, right? And if you do penetrate those walls, she will consider you a part of herself and protect you as much as she would herself.
