If you have a mental illness or disease and you make jokes about it, you’re not an asshole. You’re coping. Just because you cope in a way that seems unnatural to you, does not make you an asshole.
As a person with mild-to-severe PTSD, I’m not only informing others who do not have PTSD what it’s like to experience it, I’m throwing in humor to soften the blow of reality.
You see people joking around about being in a wheelchair or being disabled. They want to be normal See More like everyone else, but they know they can’t. So instead of moping about saying, “Woe is me,” they have a little fun about it.
I’m not degrading anyone for having PTSD or having a mental illness. I’m joking about it because I’m tired of crying about it. It hurts to have it and it hurts to wake up every morning wanting to kill myself because of it. But I get up, I get help, and I get on with my life. I’m not going to allow it to dictate my life because I have it. In joking about it, I find relief that I can finally laugh about SOMETHING. So, it does not make you an asshole. Please do not discourage people from joking about their mental illness, so as long as they don’t joke or make fun of someone else’s in a way that can or may offend them.
This isn’t an indirect, it’s a direct response to Nia’s post.
