I think that Mor is the single best LGBT representation that I, personally, have ever gotten. Almost everyone is looking for something different when it comes to representation of minorities in media because everyone has a different life and worldview and experience. But when it comes to me, this is the best thing I've gotten in a long time, and it makes me really, really happy.
First of all, the fact that she's female. Even in areas where it's getting better and more progressive, the majority of queer couples included are white gay guys. That gets super frustrating; I want to hear my story told, too.
Secondly, the fact that it's in a fantasy setting. Fantasy is my favorite genre, but it's usually really whitewashed and really heteronormative. Maas has done a fantabulous job of challenging those stereotypes, which is why she's one of my favorite authors of all time.
And... I mean. Mor doesn't come out as a lesbian, or as bi. She's like me - she's not really sure where she fits in those blurred lines.
"I prefer females."
She knows this much. Yes, she can sometimes still be attracted to guys, and has been in many relationships with them before (most to try to keep her queerness a secret, but still). She's not saying that she doesn't ever experience attraction to men. What she's saying is that she prefers women.
And jfc, I relate to that so well.
She doesn't want a relationship with Azriel because she just can't feel for him that way. And yet - this is one of the many reasons - she finds herself unable to reject him by coming out because... What good will that do? She's not saying she wants to swear off men forever. Just that she prefers females, and she knows that Azriel is not a male that she could choose. So it's not like she can get rid of his attention by saying that she's a lesbian. It's more complicated than that.
And seriously, I relate to this so so much. And it makes me feel so so so much better in my own skin to see a character like this actually portrayed - to know that I'm not alone, to know that I'm not just an outlier, to know that it's okay to feel like this. It's okay for everything to be more complex than just "I'm gay" or "I'm straight" or "I'm bi." It's okay to be confused. It's okay to try to figure it out.
Not to mention that Mor is a total badass. She's one of my new favorite characters of all time.

@Shimo The only time I ever punched a person was in sixth grade. I was at my church's vbs and this one dude kept annoying the shit out of me and wouldn't leave me alone and I said "if you don't stop I'll punch you" and he didn't stop so I felt morally obligated to punch him
Oh and also when I took taekwondo I would spar a lot. And this one girl said I was really See More creepy and intimidating bc I thought sparring was fun and exciting and apparently I have a really freaky giggle or something lol
