Chapter One
Flamingkit buried his head into a moss bed to drown out the sound of Foxwing scolding him, "By goodness I can't believe my kit would still be asleep! Get up hairball". Flamingkit lifted his head only for second to view the scene in front of him. Dawn was just peaking outside with Foxwing covering most of the dawn light with her body, Foxwing had lowered her voice to a sharp whisper so not to wake Dewkit, and Dewkit's little ears were being covered just for in case the whisper was a threat to the kit's "beauty sleep".
It was one of the mornings that Doveheart left to go hunting, the hunts were really long travels to the Moonpool to confront Star clan. Hunting mornings were the times where Foxwing was left all alone to torture him until Flamingkit could slip away to the medicine cat's den, where he would pretend to be interested in watching Amberleaf and Shallowpaw talking about herbs.
Except today was different. Today was the last day Foxwing would be in his hair, for tomorrow at noon he would be made an apprentice. Dusktooth would decide who was his mentor and after all Dusktooth was his dad, Dusktooth luckily wasn't like Foxwing at all but he like every cat was oblivious to what Foxwing did.
Finally Flamingkit shoved himself up and away from the moss bed, "Yes, Foxwing? I am up sorry that I overslept". "Ah, overslept. I am just craving a juicy mouse" Foxwing flashed her shiny teeth, "won't you fetch me one, dear?". Flamingkit winced at the sickly sweetness forced out of Foxwing's snout, "sure". As Flamingkit stepped out into camp the cold wind tickled his fur, it was New leaf but Leaf bare's cold mornings still hung around, the fresh kill pile was small with only a few voles stacked together.
Voles. Flamingkit pawed at the pile maybe just maybe there would be a mouse hiding in there somewhere, pausing he swung his head toward the Nursery. Unlike most mornings like this Foxwing wasn't watching him like a fox, and it seemed that the exit to camp looked a lot more interesting. Glancing one more checking look towards the Nursery Flamingkit ran full speed toward the exit, but before he could escape the camp he bumped into a cat.
Doveheart looked down at Flamingkit, it was then he realized that the exit was also the entrance, she had a wide smile on her face. "Flamingkit guess what?" Doveheart helped him up and started to smooth down his fur, "I know I am super early but I ran into Volestar!". Flamingkit blinked as Volestar appeared behind Doveheart, "Volestar?!". "You must be Flamingkit. Me and your uh" Volestar flashed a glance at Doveheart. "Oh um yeah me and Volestar talked about your apprenticeship and that we might do it tonight" Doveheart didn't miss a beat on covering up Volestar's mistake, then in a whisper, "It's ok cats confuse us all the time". Volestar nodded then looked back towards Flamingkit, "Well?".
Flamingkit took notice of his leader's few words. It was odd. Hearing from Elders the great stories of Volestar's speeches from battles, wide spread sicknesses, and death ceremonies. A cat of many words. But now it just seemed he wanted to get as far as away as he could from Flamingkit, as if he saw something in him, a monster.
Flamingkit shivered, "No tonight is uh fine, thank you". Doveheart seemed to sense the bubbling tension and stepped between them, "Yes thank you, see you tonight". "I'll get Dusktooth to talk to the both of you plus I'm sure he'll open up any space for his...son" Volestar paused ever so briefly but Flamingkit noticed it, "excuse me".
Flamingkit watched as Volestar padded quickly away, he only stopped when Doveheart nudged him towards the nursery, "C'mon you might as well be full rested before your apprentice ceremony".
