MER-A, Spirit
MER-A, or Spirit, another Mars Exploration Rover was launched together with Opportunity, or MER-B on June 10, 2003, and arrived on Mars January 24, 2004 in Pacific Standard Time (PST). Spirit has traveled 7.7 km since her landing, and was a very successful MER. Why I am saying WAS, even though she could overcome various problematic obstacles, there was one bump she couldn't handle. One unlucky day, Spirit got stuck in an unexpected sand trap! NASA spent weeks trying to help the unfortunate robot, but their struggles were unsuccessful.
