Chapter 1

Chapter 1         Today was the day. I'd be going to Uplift community high. That was final. I guess I'd better get used to it. Anyway the science fiction weird part of me was not going to be a problem; I had it under control, for the most part anyway. I slipped off my pajamas and changed into my newest outfit: ripped skinny jeans and the new brick red halter top that Mom found in an old consignment store. I rushed down the filthy stairs. My favorite cereal was already on the counter. I attempted to pull the milk out of the crowded fridge, but obviously failed, knocking some kind of Italian quick mix onto the floor. I managed to finally get what what I needed from this ghost of a kitchen. Mom plodded into the kitchen, and started brewing her morning coffee. She looked like she had been crying, but I got the feeling she didn't want me asking about it.
        "Morning," I said cheerfully.
She spun around, scared but still half-asleep. "Oh my goodness, I didn't notice you!" I wasn't sure what to think of her reaction. Every year, on my first day of school, Mom would make me breakfast, make sure she picked out the perfect outfit for me (which stopped working around middle school), and would always be awake before me. She would-
"Brooklyn, the bus is here." Mom noted, interrupting my thoughts, sounding relieved that I was leaving. I grabbed my backpack and trudged out the door to the bus. Oh well, it was high school, totally different than middle school; I didn't really care what mom thought.
Apparently, I had a list of classes that reached my knees. My main classes were English, French, Biology 101, History 201, and geometry. The list went on and on. I headed towards class hoping that everything would run smoothly, and BOOM! I turned the corner and bumped straight into a teacher!
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I... um ... sorry!" I squeaked, embarrassed.
"Next time be more careful, child." growled the man, Then he huffed off. The rest of the day was a blurry mess, mostly because of me I didn't really get any good first impressions, with the students or teachers. When I got home mom was at work so I just grabbed some potato chips and went to my bedroom. After a few hours I went downstairs to get a Dr. Pepper and as I passed the open window I heard something whiz by my ear.
