Chapter 1
Electra, be way more polite. Electra, cut your nails. Electra, trim your hair. Electra, add more makeup to your face.
They always find something wrong with me.
I could never have survived royal life if not for my two best friends, Lesa and Marco. Lesa is my sister. She has always been supportive. I'm a “princess”, which most royals of Castle Rang call a “queen's royalty” because most daughters and sons (sons are called “king's royalty”) are favored by their parents. Only my dad's trying to take over New Vania to rule and my mom's kinda loony, so I should actually be called “sister's royalty” since Lesa's the only one supporting me. Besides Marco, of course.
Before you turn eighteen you must pick someone to marry you or else Sir Cumference will choose someone for you. (I know. Wacky name...don't ask.) That's what happened with Lesa. So she's stuck with a boring old lawyer named Gregg who loves the color gray and reading the newspaper. I'm not kidding.
When you turn eighteen, you venture off with your husband or wife and are given a year to find a place to rule or become royalty or build your own Castle or even a Kingdom.
I'm thankful I'm only fifteen. Lesa is twenty and Marco is sixteen. Daddy's hunt for royalty in New Vania is not going so well so now I only get to see Lesa once a month since she goes from the Castle she created, Castle Seasilk, to her best friend Lynn in Castle Lakeudden, to Daddy in New Vania, back here to Castle Rang. At first she had to ride in a wagon, but then she got a chariot with two stallions named Chief and Strider so she's much faster.

I walk down the royalty chambers corridor with the ceiling as high as a church ceiling. A red carpet with floral patterns sits on the floor. The windows let the last rays of sunlight in before the thousands of crystal chandeliers turn on. To the first room on the right is my room, and I step inside. It's roomy with eight bookshelves filled with books. A pink canopy bed is nestled in the corner of my pink room next to the window which has pink curtains. Another window is above my bookshelves, identical to the first one. A pink, circular, fluffy rug is next to my bed. The walls are pink with lighter pink polka dots and the floor is striped with pink and green and lavender.
Whereas Lesa's room is blue and Marco's room is green.
I go to my closet and change into my evening gown—a pale blue flowing dress that has a navy blue belt that connects with a square of dark gold. I put on my nightly tiara which is silver studded with opals, sapphires, dark gold bits and pieces, apatite, aquamarine, and a rainbow moonstone. I put on the shoes, which are navy blue with sapphires on the end surrounded by a gold lace. And finally, I put a navy blue veil with opals and sapphires on the top. I let my hair stay down and, even though Mother wants me to dye my hair brown on special occasions, I keep it blond.
When I start walking down the steps to the dining hall, I hear a rumble, a boom, and feel the ground shaking. It happens again, and again, and again, and again. The wall behind me collapses and keeps on collapsing towards me. I tear off my veil to see the stairs better, accidentally taking off my tiara, too, and I stumble and come out of my shoes. The crumbling wall immediately crushes them and  cuts my heel. I sprint down the stairs and into the dining hall, putting good distance between me and the wall.
People stare at me, puzzled. Some, like Sir George Kalberts, are in the middle of serving themselves some biscuits, fruit, or soup. Lesa is standing next to Mother, asking her a question, and when she sees me tear through the dining hall, she jumps after me, dragging Mother, as the crumbling wall enters the room. Marco closely follows me, and most of Castle Rang is on my heels. I'm not sure it's safe to go outside, but I don't want to get smashed like a bug under that crumbling wall.
Sir George Kalberts dives for his biscuit, the impending wall about to crush it. He gets the food and scrambles up,  but with nerves he falls down again and the wall crushes him with a humongous CRACK! And a bunch of pleasant smushing sounds, too.
Three quarters of the royals do what I call a Flinch 'n' Freeze, where they flinch and just stand their like complete idiots. One quarter of us is still running: Me, Mother, Lesa, Marco, Sir Cal, part of the Castle Rang government, Meg, a servant named Kip, another servant, and many others. About half of the castle staff and royals gets crushed, making the hair on the back of my neck stand up and prickle.
We finally make it outside, except it's not much better. Millions of volcanoes we didn't even know existed on Rang Island are erupting and exploding. The gasses and ash is making it dark and you could only breathe in a couple breaths before you'd pass out (I found out because a servant named Whit was hyperventilating and immediately passed out).
I grab scattered debris and cover my mouth for a tiny bit of fresher air. I sink to my knees, then sit down, because most of the gasses would be up and it took more energy to stand up then sit down and you don't want to use up energy when you holding your breath a lot.
I close my eyes to prevent them from seeing people filled with melancholy, sorrow, and dread. I put my hands over my ears to block out the screams and moans.
I think I doze off, because Marco wakes me. I am lying in a hunched position, my eyes squeezed tight, my hands over my ears.
“Hey, wake up. The volcanoes are done.” He gasps for air at the end, which makes me frown and sit up. I open my eyes. I look at Marco. Then I look at the sky.
        I can barely breathe.
I see millions of stars and I see a yellowish speck, far away. The sun. And I see billions of comets and asteroids and meteors coming, thousands hitting Earth. A few tiny ones are raining down on us, but suddenly, a comet the size of a house falls about a mile away, sending a tremor through the ground.
I stand up, but as another gargantuan comet hits the planet, I get blown off balance.
        “What's happening?!” I ask Marco.
“I don't know.” He shakes his head in utter disbelief. “But I think the volcanoes destroyed the atmosphere. We won't be able to breathe soon.”
When this sinks in I grab a plexiglass fruit bowl and shove it over my head. Marco grabs another one and repeats what I did.
I should probably sit down and relax but my middle name isn't “Curiosity” for nothing. I stand up and explore Rang Island. I have to use a solar paneled flashlight to see things.
I start noticing how cold it is. Like, really cold. I grab many clothes from run-down wardrobes. I stuff them over my gown to help stay a little warmer.
I also notice that when enormous asteroids and stuff hit the planet, there's no sound, just vibrations, now. Everywhere I look people are on the ground, dead. I can barely breathe, and the breath feels knocked out of me. But I will myself to keep sucking in something.
Then suddenly, right out of the blue, as a humongous flaming space rock hits the ground, the explosion sends me flying backwards and I inhale smoke and debris and I start choking and coughing and by then the bowl has fallen off my head and a can't breathe, no matter how hard I try; my lungs are collapsing and all I'm doing is panicking and wheezing and calling out Lesa's name, but as I hit the ground and I see her body a hundred feet away, I realize the truth: Lesa is dead, like me and Marco are about to be.
Chapter 2
When I wake up, I find myself in a room. Yes, a room. In fact, lying on a bed in a room. Some stuff is floating upwards, but mostly things are attached to the ground somehow. I'm even Velcroed onto my bed. I wonder why. For some reason, my head aches and feels heavy yet blank. I groan softly but don't feel like talking or moving. I'm seeing a blurry two of everything. I blearily blink and everything comes into focus. I hear distant voices, and one sounds like Marco's voice. There's one voice that is very deep, and the other one sound like a female. As I comprehend their discussion, I have to fight off a wave of nausea.
Our world blew up. The two others, apparently from the planet Kavcud had seen this coming on their radar and, allies with us in some sort of secret war against two other planets called Raqvr and Tcal, rescued some of us (obviously just me and Marco because we were the only ones who survived) on some sort of high-tech rocket ship thing, so now we're in outer space.
I want to get up because I have a million bajillion questions, so I undo the Velcro and start floating up into the air. I yelp and struggle to get back to the ground, so I grab a Velcro strap and make my way to a pair of white boots on the floor. I slip my feet into them and realize I can let go of the strap and I won't float of. I try shuffling towards a little round door and find out that I can just walk normally. When I try opening the door, it won't budge, but finally I get it to open and realize why it was shut so tight.
Outside was space. I opened it and found a small tether with a carabiner on the end of it, which I held in my hands since I was dressed in a long sleeve shirt and jeans. I hurried across a little bridge to another door, practically running because of not only lack of oxygen but it was way way way way below freezing cold and the digital thermometer outside literally said -454.81 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a far off land, known as the Farmer's Garden, lived eleven Onions named JJ, Elma, Vivian, Brad, Joe, Bob and Fred, Lisa, Kali, Anise, and Meg. JJ was the sportiest, Elma was smart, Vivian pointed out mistakes and corrected them (out of habit), Brad was funny and looked on the bright side of things, Joe was always happy, Bob and Fred were, well, quite dumb, Lisa was really tough (tough as an Onion can get!), Kali loved fashion, Anise loved kids, and Meg loved animals. Meg was kind of a misfit, because, as you know, animals eat Onions!!
But one horrible day, the farmer, Farmer McClain, planted, of all things, Squash, next to the Onions. After a month or so, the Squash grew. And then came harvest time. Farmer McClain never harvested the Onions. They were too sour, according to him. Once, he picked one of the meanest Onions—Lola. She was so sour Farmer McClain cried when he ate her. That rid him of his liking of Onions. But the other Onions were happy she was gone.
Soon, Lisa heard one of the Squash, Herbert, say he planned on attacking the Onions when Harvest Time came. Lisa told JJ and JJ decided to form an army. Vivian, Brad, Joe, Bob and Fred, Lisa, and Meg agreed. JJ had to tell Kali that she could make the uniform to convince her to get in the army. But Elma couldn't be convinced. Finally, after three minutes of arguing, she gave in.
JJ wanted to name this army something. He asked for suggestions. “Ooh! Ooh! I have an idea! The Air Force!” yelled Bob excitedly.
JJ frowned. “Firstly, we don't live in the air and we aren't very forceful, and, secondly, the name's taken.”
This time, Bob frowned. “How 'bout the Marines? The Army! The Air—oh wait. The Navy! Or the Coast Guard! Huh? Any of those?!”
“The names are already TAKEN!” yelled JJ, Lisa, Vivian, and Kali.
JJ tried to calm himself down. “Listen, guys. I want creative names, not names that are already TAKEN!”
Elma had a suggestion. “How about the Union of Sour Yet Sweet And Delicious In Stews And They're Vegetables Called Onions?”
“That's way too long, Elma,” Vivian pointed out. “Shorten it down a bit to make it be, say—”
“THE ONION UNION!” screamed Brad, Joe, Bob, Fred, and Kali.
JJ smiled. “I like it. Now, I'm gonna be the trainer. And everyone has to follow my orders. And that's an order!”
After every Onion settled down, JJ continued. “Every Onion's gotta be tough. Yes, yes, I know Lisa, you can be the assistant. So. Today's plan is—”
Just then, Flee, a messenger fly, zoomed towards the Onions and shouted, “Two new Onions have sprouted named Evelyn and Everly! They are in Row 4. They were planted two seconds apart so they are officially brother and sister!” Flee zoomed away.
JJ, Lisa, Elma, Vivian, Joe, and Kali all gasped. “Come on, guys, lets go check 'em out!” encouraged Lisa.
“I agree,” said Elma. “After all, the birds always come for the new Onions, not the older Onions like us.”
The Onions shuffled from their raised up rows to the other side of the Farmer's Garden, where Row 4 was. Eight dead plants sprouted from the ground, but the two closest left were alive and looking frightened. They were both very young.
Anise stepped forward. “Awwww, look at you. Are you little ones okay? By the way, I'm Anise. And I believe you are Evelyn and Everly?”
The girl nodded. “Yeah, I'm Evelyn. Dis is my bwuvver Everwy. We aw bwuvver and sister. Wite, Everwy?”
        “Uh-huh! I wuv being Evewyne's bwuther! Yay!”
“Aww, you are so cute!” said Anise. “What happened?”
“Well, we got pwanted and den we gwoo up like dis!” began Evelyn. “And den...and den....” Evelyn burst into tears, and her brother filled in for her.
“And den de Squash, dey came marching over here. Dey squashed everyone right after we gwoo! We barely survived. Wite, sis?”
        Evelyn nodded.
Anise's eyes widened. She looked over at JJ and he nodded grimly. “ONIONS! Back to our station! It's officially time to began our Onion Union!”
-The Onion Union

Beginning
I am pretty sure that I won't ever see them again. But they appeared and disappeared quite often, and I would never know where they would turn up eventually. They were Windstorm and Snowclash, two amazing puppy twins, who were adopted into Bolt. Bolt was an army with dogs of all kinds. There were the P.I.T.s, or Puppies In Training, trainers, warriors, and R.D.s, or Retired Dogs. For some time I had kept Windstorm and Snowclash. I watched them play, I fed them, I walked them, I did everything to keep them healthy. But one day, as I got up to feed them, I noticed they weren't there. It had rained last night, and the small backyard was muddy and I noticed little pawprints. Snowclash and Windstorm! I thought. I followed the prints into the forest behind the field where the horses and cows grazed. I kept on following the prints, and finally I reached a familiar clearing that my sister called Gold Clearing. She named it that because, if the sun was a little bit tilted to the west, Gold Clearing was filled with a golden light.
In the village, which was down the dirt hill, there was a queen in the Fortress of Vatican City. Pets were only allowed on top of the hill, or rather, the Pet Mound. The queen was allergic to all animals except mice, but she was quite terrified of mice. Her name was Queen Verita. I had a friend named Helena, but she brought a mouse into town and was banished from Vatican City for eternity. Instead, she moved to Russia and became a top fashion model. I was quite disappointed when she notified me that, instead of carrying on our original plans, she had moved to Russia instead of Svalbard or Jan Mayen.
Anyway, at first, when I had adopted Windclash and Snowstorm, or rather, Snowclash and Windstorm, I was extremely worried that Queen Verita would ban me from Vatican City. I then heard of the Pet Mound by someone who was visiting, from Gibraltar, in
the U.K.
As I was looking for Snowclash and Windstorm, I noticed a tiny white puppy staring up at me with huge brown eyes. It blinked, and I ran. It may seem odd to run because a puppy blinked, but I knew about magic, and wasn't in the mood to get killed at the moment. I only had one choice to get out of here. I picked up the puppy. It struggled, but I held on tight. I walked into town, and when the queen yelled, “Out! NOW!” I grabbed the puppy and fled.

“Windstorm! WINDSTORM! WINDSTORM!!!!” I could hear the voice, but not see who was saying it. My fierce sister, Snowclash, leaped up beside me. “Who is saying that?” she called out into the misty, cold, air. “Windstorm!!!!!!!!!!!” The voice was louder and sounded less distant. Suddenly, I couldn't hear anything at all. A big, fat, juicy squirrel climbed up a tree. I focused all my attention on it, trying to be as quite as possible. I bolted, pounced, and bashed my head against the tree. Then, out of the blue, “WINDSTORM!!!!!!!!” I barked and awoke.
“About time!” said Makaar grumpily. His daughter, Suzi, raced towards me and shrieked, “Doggie!” She slapped me on the head. Then Millin came in. She poured Suzi water and poured some cream into a bowl. Suzi didn't have all her teeth in yet and still needed Yum, which was baby food. Suzi gobbled up her cream, and went upstairs to her bedroom. It was going to be her first day at Baby & Toddler Academy. Oh, like I'm all excited and can't wait to go. Yeah, right. I hate the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, because all my family does is feed Suzi, me, and Snowclash, and race off to work. Millin would have to walk Suzi to baby school. Alaina was starting her first day of sophomore at college today. Alaina was so exited last week, that when Makaar, Millin, and Suzi were in Norway, Alaina forgot to feed me. Ha ha. So funny I'm not even smiling.
Makaar said good-bye to Suzi, and wished Alaina good luck at Oxford University. He went out to the horse carriage and went off to Galeries Lafayette in Paris. Millin wished good luck to Alaina, also, dressed Suzi, and carried her out the front door, where she walked Suzi to Baby & Toddler Academy.
So now just me, Snowclash, and Alaina, who is very responsible and always feeds us on time. Yep. I'm not kidding. Oh, wait! Except for that time when she didn't feed me for a whole week! Oh, now I remember! Ha ha. You may think it's funny, but I think the exact opposite.
Alaina got ready and left for Oxford. Oh, boy, am I surprised! She forgot to let us out again. Now we'll sit in here, all bored and—hey, I want to pay them back! I have a splendid idea! The neighbors, Anala, Arlanadar, and their kids, Josanna and Reese, have this huge mansion. As there are only four people in the family, and about fifty rooms, they normally stay in just a few rooms. Actually, I heard all the first story and second story were empty, and they only stayed on the third through fifth floors. I heard they actually connected a garage to the third floor, and used a ramp to get up to it, that would then close when the car was parked in the garage. Pretty cool, huh? Nope. The stupid thing squeaks and creaks every evening, afternoon, and morning.
My idea was to sneak into their garage and destroy it. Makaar and Millin are friends with Anala and Arlanadar, and Suzi is friends with Reese, and Alaina is friends with Josanna. They're all Spanish, but they speak English. When Josanna was teaching Suzi how to read Spanish, she wrote Hola, Josanna, which means, Hello, Josanna. Suzi thought Josanna meant Josanna, with the actual “J” sound, when it actually sounds like “Hozanna”. My friends, other than Snowclash, named La and Plea, were coming over. And to make things worse, we were going to destroy the whole living room at our place!
****

8 weeks later..... “I'm starving, Windstorm!” Snowclash growled. I could see that. La and Plea were completely silent behind us. After ripping up the Jengulls' garage, and the living room and Suzi's room at our house, Makaar banished me and Snowclash from Vatican City. Well, technically, he banished us from the Pet Mound, and we went to the Fortress, and Queen Verita banished us from Vatican City. Now we were traveling to Svalbard. Svalbard wasn't too far away. When we reached Svalbard, we would put up camp and travel to Jan Mayen.
La got very sick along the way....
