Cousin
I am sitting in the office at the moment waiting for my parents to come pick me up early. The office lady (I forget her name) didn’t think it was that big of a deal to call an ambulance, me with JUST a pounding headache and a slightly bleeding elbow, and holding an ice pack on my head with my good arm and another ice pack under my bad elbow on the arm of the shiny black vinyl seat I am sitting in. And every move I make it makes a squeaky sound so I try not to move around too much, and every time I do, Ms Office lady shoots me an odd look.|FLASHBACK|
I run out the door to the girls toilets, happy to get away from Ada’s feels-like-they-are-never-ending-questions and overly chirpy voice, I trip, and feel my head hit something hard. My vision feels a bit blurry and my eyelids feel heavy but I try my best not to let them close as I feel a sharp pain coming from one of my elbows. I hear Ada squeal and run possibly to the nearest teacher, and then her two friends, Gabriella and Abby, and the four of them (including a teacher) sort-of crowd around me, and the three girls practically carry me to the office with my bag and dump me in one of the black vinyl seats.
The office lady scuttles out of the little room towards me and asks if I have a headache and if I feel dizzy or not. “Yeah...” I mumble, and somehow she manages to hear it and checks my elbow and cleans it with a tissue. She goes into the little room again and comes back out a few seconds later with two ice packs wrapped in paper towel, and hands them to me; I put one under my sore elbow and the other one on my head.....
|END OF FLASHBACK|
The second bell still hasn’t went yet so my class still must be lining up wherever they are having math's and science. I want to go to sleep, I didn’t get very much sleep last night and my headache and dizziness is not making it any better. Mum should not be very long because where she works at the moment isn’t very far from the school, and she’s always on the speed limit anyway. Omg I have just remembered. Ashley probably doesn’t know I am going home pretty soon, but he will be fine between now and tomorrow morning before school starts.
My phone vibrates in my pocket; it must be a text or something, so I take it out and see who it is from.
It’s Penny! One of my friends from my previous school. She was awesome and I am pretty sure she still is.
FILLIPA!!!! How's ya new scool goin? It says. I really don’t get why we bother shortening words in texts and stuff like that. That text has thirty letters and other stuff in it, when in real life that could be a thirty four letter sentence. But still, we shorten them. Anyway, it’s about time she texted me.
Okay. Have to go home early cos I hit my head on something. I text back.
Awww hope u get beta an don't die on me... the very sympathetic text reads. No sarcasm from me or her. I very highly doubt I will die from a simple headache and a grazed elbow. Well, it is a possibility, but I will try not to think about that too much.
Trust me, I will be just fine! I reply. I WILL be just fine. Penny has nothing to worry about at the moment. Well at my previous school, she was ALWAYS worrying about me even when we weren’t yet friends. She wasn’t boy crazy or anything like most of the other girls. She will make a good nurse someday in the future because of how much she cares about little things.
After a couple of minutes she doesn’t reply and Mum is here to pick me up to go home. She waves to me, and I wave back. I continue sitting on the seat while Mum and the office lady sign me out so I can go home. I wonder over to Mum and stand next to her as she asks, “What happened, darling?” “Oh, I fell over and hit my head on something...” I answer. “And by the looks of it you also grazed your elbow,” Mum says, pointing at my bad elbow. “Yeah.....” I mumble. I suddenly get another text.
OMG! I found out tht u go 2 the same scool as Ashley does! Okay, now I am a tad confused. Is she texting about Ashley? Or another Ashley?
Ashley who? I reply. I only know one Ashley.
Ashley pierce! Do u no him? He's my cuz! He is her cousin? We learn something new every day.
“Who are you texting?” Mum asks, looking me in the eye. “Penny,” I say simply. “Oh that damn Penny you sit up all night calling or texting her! But it’s been a while... ” she says, chuckling.
