The Truth about Nick
Suddenly, I realize something about Nick. He'd talked about his life before the whole zombie thing, as if he remembered what it was like. Plus, he said that his arm got bitten, and so he had to have it replaced by a prosthetic, and he was right there in his father's plant to do it.
But neither Holly, Matt, Dexter, or I remembered anything about our pasts. The zombie thing started when we woke up in the middle of nowhere, away from everything we had before.
How did Nick know what his life was like? And how was he right in his father's factory when he was bitten?
I put my hands on my hips. "Nick," I say, my voice hard. "How come you remember everything about your old life, when no one else does? And how could you have been in your dad's factory when your arm was bitten?"
Nick's face pales. "Er..." he stammers. "Well, you see.." he rubs his neck and sighs. "Okay. Fine. The thing is, well... I remember that stuff because my memory wasn't taken away." He pauses. "My father was one of the people who organized all this. He was a scientist, working with the government. There was an epidemic within a hospital in North Carolina, which caused the actual apocalypse. The government decided to wall off North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, all the states in that area, before the zombies could get out. Then they were faced with the problem of how to get rid of the zombies. They said that they would put some people within the walls so that they could kill the zombies. But they didn't want the adults to go, because they needed responsible grownups to be the ones to make all sorts of important decisions. So they put kids in, instead. They thought that the kids would be less likely to try to escape if they didn't remember that there was something to escape to. They gave them a serum to erase their memories. My dad engineered the serum. He was against the whole idea, but he couldn't just secretly weaken the serum so it wouldn't work - the government was going to test it on someone. So he made it work, but I was one of the kids they put in, and he didn't put it in me. He said that I should tell all the other kids what happened, and we'd work together to get out."
I'm gaping, and so is Dexter. Holly's still asleep downstairs. "Wow..." I murmur. "But what about when you said your other arm was bitten, and you were able to receive a prosthetic?"
"Oh yeah, that," Nick replies. "Well, the government wasn't totally heartless. They released 'silver parachutes' so the kids would have a chance. When my dad heard that I'd been bitten, he sent me a prosthetic."
"Wait a minute..." I say. "When he HEARD? How could he hear you'd been bitten?"
Nick pulls a small device out of a hatch in his first prosthetic arm. "We communicate with these." he says.
