chapter 2
Chapter 2Rachel is Kim Tan’s fiancée. She is rude. Her mother got divorced. “Remarriage?! It hasn’t been too long since you’ve divorced dad! How can you remarry?” Rachel asked her mom shocked. “Enough time has passed for me to remarry.” her mom replied. “Does dad know?” “Why? Should I tell him and get his blessings?” “new articles regarding my wedding will get published, so he will find out when he sees them anyway.” “I have plans to have lunch. Change your clothes…your skin tone makes you look dead.” said Rachel’s mom making fun of her. “With whom? With dad?” “With your stepfather.” “Mom!” “Change your shoes as well. You can’t wear high heels. Wear flats” “he isn’t too tall.” “Who is he? Who is the guy that’s short and well known, enough that he will be recognized in the news?” Rachel asked while shouting.
Ha Ni and her mom were going to the bank in the early morning. They were walking in silence and suddenly Ha Ni said “is he rich? How old is he? Is he Korean, or is he American? Did you ask what he did for living?” “Please respond to my questions.” Ha Ni begged her mom. “Did she say she was going to invite us? Is she going to send us plane tickets?” “Do you know where it is? It’s not a place for you to go!” Ha Ni mom responded. “I told you to write when we are outside. No sign language.” Ha Ni’s mom started writing. “She’s responsible enough to be an American college by herself. Of course, she made a proper decision.” “If we go, we’ll just be like a stain.” “Why? Why are you saying that?” “She said he is kind hearted and hardworking. So she doesn’t want to lose him. That’s good enough. What more should we expect?” “Why can’t we expect more? After my sister left the house I…I’m going to go to her wedding. I’m not sending money.” “Will the money go to America just because we do it at the bank?” “I will bring money in person to America.” “I have a part time job. I’m going.” Ha Ni left her mom standing shocked.
Rachel and her mom were sitting with park lee and his dad having lunch together. “Amazing.” said Rachel mom. “It was worthwhile, putting in your efforts to bring the new head chef.” “Yes, profits have jumped considerably.” said park lee father. “The existing chef was good. But as soon as he got another offer, he betrayed me.” “In the end, you benefited from this.” “Everything happens like that. Things happen for a reason.” “You are right.” “That’s why I think what happened for our family… happened for a reason.” Park lee laughed. “What you are saying is correct” said Rachel mother. “I think that park lee has an earlier birthday than Rachel.” “Please say hello.” “You will be the younger sister, hello sister.” said park lee. Rachel laughed so hard. “I hope you will take good care of her as an older brother.” said Rachel mother. “Of course, she is just my type.” Rachel mother and park lee father looked shocked for a while. “Then… I have an appointment.” said park lee. “Sit down.” Said park lee father but park lee continued so park lee father stood up and slapped park lee so hard. Rachel and her mother’s eyes were wide open. “Sit down.” said park lee father again. “Now I really can’t sit. It’s too embarrassing in front of my younger sister. Enjoy your meal… as a family.” Park lee walked away. Park lee father sat down. “I apologize for his behavior.” “No, don’t. I plan on receiving the apology from him.” Rachel stood up and walked away.
Rachel went after park lee. “Hey, brother. From what I can tell, you are the kind who just asks for punishments.” “After seeing such a special event why didn’t you just stay in there and keep eating. If you are here to hold on to me…” “I’m here to let go of you.” “Then have fun losing Me.” park lee said and started the motorcycle. “You know I’m engaged to Kim Tan, right?” “If we become siblings… then are you and Tan…brothers-in-law?” said Rachel smiling to park lee. “What about it?” park lee asked. “I’m saying that you are not the only one who is against this marriage.” “I never said I was against this marriage.” “What do you mean by that?” Rachel asked shocked. “Don’t you know what marriage means in this world, even after being engaged yourself?” “So I’m saying, what do you mean by that? Explain it clearly.” “I mean the takeover syndromes.” “What do you think will end up with your mother’s internal ownership?” “So if you want to try breaking this marriage, try your best.”
Ha Ni worked so hard to get the money for the ticket. And she went to exchange money and bought the ticket and then she went home. “I exchanged money and bought the ticket” Ha Ni said to her mother. “Don’t worry, I will give her the money safely and return.” “I think it would be good if at least one family member were there for the wedding.” Ha Ni started putting the notes that belong to her mom in the closet and she opened one and she started reading. (Elder Madam came to visit earlier on.) (I’m sorry, Madam.) (What would you like for dinner, Madame?) Ha Ni started crying. (Please don’t be so mad, Madam.) (I don’t know English very well. I’ll memorize it as quickly as I can, Madam.) (Dry cleaning in English. Dry cleaning only.) “Are you making bean powder?” Ha Ni asked. Ha Ni wrote in the note (I’m sorry, Mom.) after that Ha Ni started preparing the traveling bag.
Rachel was preparing her traveling bag because she was going to Kim Tam in America. She wanted to pay him a visit.
While in California, a place I was practically banished to, the first thing I thought was that I’ll be able to eat a lot of almonds. That was my thought and for a short while, like a scholar on exile… “Should I rebel once…?” was what I have thought. But just as what hyung said, I just ate and played. As a result, I’ve come to make a policeman be on the lookout for my face. At school, I’ve always gained attention. Also, I’ve learned how to make my mom in seoul cry. “Somebody is calling.” Johnny said while holding my phone. “Thanks.” I said. I saw the phone and it was Rachel I threw the phone away. “You are not going to answer? It’s been ringing for a while.” “No. I already know who is calling. It’s my fiancée, she’s either about to get on the plane, or could be on the plane, or could be already here.” “It’s our engagement anniversary soon.” “You look like none of that is good to you.” “No.” “Then let’s go surfing.” “yaaay.”
Ha Ni arrived to America. She was standing nervously and she does not know anybody and she can’t speak English. Everybody is waiting for other people and nobody is waiting for her. “Hey, it’s me. I just got here.” Rachel said talking in the phone. Ha Ni was looking at Rachel because she was speaking Korean. “Of course, Tan came. Do you think I would be alone?” Rachel said and she was lying. Rachel looked at ha Ni so ha Ni looked away quickly. Rachel came near Ha Ni. “Hey there!” said Rachel. “Why are you snickering?” “I wasn’t snickering.” Ha Ni replied. “It’s just what you said over the phone and what I saw are different.” “Do I look like I want to be debating this with you?” “It’s something like empathy. So it’s not just me who is not welcomed here. That’s what I was thinking.” “What?” “Never mind I’ll be going.” Ha Ni walked away.
She went to the beach and she was looking at people. In the same time Kim tan was at the beach surfing and he was going out of water. “So I’m really abroad…” Ha Ni said whispering to herself. She looked at Tan and he saw her. He looked at her for a while and then Ha Ni walked away. Ha Ni walked and walked until she arrived at her destination. Her sister’s house. She knocked the door. “Who is it?” someone asked. “Sister, it’s me, Ha Ni.” And the door opened and it wasn’t her sister. It was an American girl. “Hello?” “Cha Eun Seok isn’t here? I don’t really know English…” “What are you even talking about? Chris?” “Who the hell is it?” said Chris. “Ha Ni?” said Chris. The house was so bad. And the guy was cheating on her sister. Her sister isn’t even getting married. “Hey you, are you Cha Eun husband?” said Ha Ni “husband?” said Chris. “We just live together.” “Live together? What about getting married?” “Married?” “Why would I marry her?” “Her university, where?” “University? She doesn’t go to school.” “Going to school was a lie too?!” “I’m asking where that crazy b*tch is?!” said Ha Ni shouting.
Kim Tan was sitting in the café just like he always does. In that café Ha Ni’s sister works there too. “What are you always writing?” said the waitress (Ha Ni’s sister) “school homework” Kim Tan replied. “You look like someone who doesn’t do homework.” “It’s because I look like I don’t do them, that’s why I’m doing it. It’s somewhat rebelling.” “Thanks for the coffee.” “If you need anything, tell me.” Ha Ni arrived in front of the café. And she was looking around. Kim Tan recognized her and started looking at her. Ha Ni saw her sister and a man was putting money in her clothes. Ha Ni was shocked and had her mouth wide open. Her sister is so bad. Kim Tan saw what her sister was doing and he started to understand a little bet. Ha Ni started crying and the tears were falling. Ha Ni’s sister went to Kim Tan. “Do you want some more coffee?” He didn’t answer because he was looking at Ha Ni. Ha Ni’s sister looked and she finally saw Ha Ni and she was shocked and her mouth was wide open too. She dropped the coffee and then ran out. “Ha Ni, what happened? Why are you here? Something happened to mom?” Ha Ni’s sister asked. “Mom?! Can words like (mom) come out from your mouth?” “When did you come? You should have contacted me.” “I tried to contact you, but I couldn’t.” “From whom did you hear that I was working here?” “What do you mean (who)? Of course, from the person that you live with.” “You went to my house?” “Yes, I went to your house!” “You have been living while giving that man money for alcohol? Until when are you going to keep telling lies? Married? You met a good man? You are going to school?” Ha Ni shouted. Ha Ni’s sister opened Ha Ni’s bag and started getting the clothes out and got the pocket that contains the money. “Get your hands off that money.” Ha Ni shouted. “Hurry and go back to Korea. I’ll call mom.” “Don’t you know what mom had to do to earn this money?” “Just go!” Ha Ni’s sister ran away with the money. Ha Ni started crying so hard and all that time Kim Tan is watching.
Ha Ni started putting the clothes back quickly and then Johnny Kim Tan’s friend came and he took the bean powder from her bag and ran away thinking that it’s drug. Ha Ni ran after him and Kim Tan after them. Johnny opened the packet and started eating it and he had an allergic to beans so he fainted. Ha Ni and Kim Tan took him to the hospital quickly. “Your friend will be okay, right?” asked Ha Ni. “Why on earth do you carry that thing around?” asked Kim Tan. “Are you getting mad at me? The one who stole was your friend, you know.” “He was drunk. If he was on drugs, he would have differentiated bean flour from drugs.” “That’s why you are saying this is my fault?” “The person who was hassled was me.” Kim Tan said and then he left.
“Is this yours?” asked the policeman pointing to the bean flour. Ha Ni looked shocked. “This is bean flour. My point is, it’s not a drug.” said Ha Ni. “Well, we need to look into that. People don’t normally eat food through their nose, do they?” said the policeman. “What’s your address?” asked the police man. “What?” “Your address?” “Ah, address. I’m from Korea, I’m Korean.” “Korea? Let me see your passport. You look young, are you underage?” Ha Ni gave the policeman the passport. “Where are you staying in the US? You are not here illegally, are you?” “What’s going on? This is crazy.” said Ha Ni whispering to herself.
Kim Tan came and he hugged her. “It’s ok, baby.” said Kim Tan to Ha Ni. “She’s my girlfriend. Just here for a bit.” said Kim Tan explaining to the police man. “Hey Tan. Long time no see. Of course, you were involved.” said the police man. “Whatever, that’s not drug anyway. You know that.” “Even if I thought it wasn’t, now that you’re involved, I can’t think that way anymore.” “What did he say? Did he say something bad?” asked Ha Ni. Kim Tan didn’t answer. “Look, until we get the results, I’m keeping your girlfriend passport.” That policeman walked away. “What situation is this? Why is he taking my passport? When is he returning it?” “When the time comes.” When is that?” “Until they finish their investigation.” “When will it be finished?” “Are going to keep staying here? Where are you staying? I need to know so that I can tell you when the police calls.” “That’s what I was saying about my ha…can you lend me your cell phone for a while? I will pay for the call. My sister leaves nearby.” “Would she answer your call? After fighting big time like that.” “You saw that?” “You are not going to call her to ask if you can sleep there, right?” “That’s not something for you to be concerned with. I’m saying again, this is not 100% just my fault. So when you are going home, give me a ride. I will pay for the fair.” “You keep on trying to settle things with money. Do you have a lot of money?” “It’s because you might just leave. Please.” Kim Tan took her and he dropped her at her sister’s house.
“In the morning at 8, then at 12 and 3 in the afternoon, I’ll call you 3 times If my passport is back, you can answer, and if not, you don’t have to answer.” “You are doing all sorts of things.” “Thank you for bringing me here.” She took her bag and she sat down at the stairs waiting… It was dark. Kim Tan was waiting then he got out of the car and went to her. “No one’s there?” “She would come.” “You will wait until she comes?” “She could have gone somewhere nearby.” “Haven’t you heard anything of the night streets in the US?” “Hey, that’s scary.” “Do you think a person who ran with money would be at home?” “She will come.” “Alright then. Wait.” And he left her. A group of drunken guys were passing by. And they started whistling and clapping trying to scare her. Then they left her. She was so scared. She stood up and took her bag and left. Then a care was coming. He was Kim Tan coming for her. She looked at him shocked.
