Chapter 4

Dapplekit was the first kit to awaken, stretching her legs and tasting the fresh morning air. The sky was clear, with pink and yellow sunshine flowing through the ferns. She nudged Maplekit, who was still snoring. Maplekit screeched “Greykit is gone!” Emberheart awoke, startled, “What about Greykit?” she exclaimed. She sniffed the nest, but the scent of Greykit was gone.
Emberheart yowled, and lept up onto a branch above the camp. “Help! My kit!” she yelped. Several warriors, and Brackenstar, awoke suddenly. They leapt from their dens. “My kit, Greykit is missing!” she panted. The warriors took off at once, and Mudface went up to his mate, the kits not far behind. Mudface, fear in his eyes, touched his dry nose to his mate, and ran off to find his son.
