Chapter 3

School. The last place Sherlock would want to be. The twelve-year-old boy shuffles into the school grounds, looking at people with their friends and such. Speaking of friends, Sherlock sees a familiar girl, being picked on by other kids. "What are you gonna do about it, freak!" he faintly hears a girl say, the bully. Sherlock quickly rushes to the crowd, to see Elizabeth cornered while the bully, Taylor Mickey, smiled menacingly at her.
"Nothing." Elizabeth said bravely, even though she is cowering away from the bully.
"Nothing?" Taylor repeats, laughing along with everyone else.
"Nothing." Elizabeth confirms. "Because your father is already going to do something about it." That had gotten everyone's attention.
"What?" Taylor asks her calmly, though you can see the anger and fear in her eyes.
"I said I am not going to do anything because you already get beaten up by your father at home." Elizabeth explains, no longer cowering in the corner. "Your mother left you and your father for another man, making your father blame you. He started drinking and lashing his anger out on you. You cover up your bruises with make up, though it is quite obvious. He insults you, resulting in you cutting yourself. I can see through the make up on your arm that it says 'ugly'. You release your own anger by bullying people. You saw me as the new kid, and immediately start to bully me."
Everyone is quiet watching her, even the teachers and staff that were attempting to stop the fight, while Sherlock smiles proudly at Elizabeth. It takes guts to stand up to Taylor, and Sherlock couldn't be anymore happy to call Elizabeth his friend. "That is why I am not going to do anything about you stealing my lunch money." Elizabeth speaks up, bringing Sherlock back to reality from his thoughts.
"YOU BITCH!" Taylor suddenly yells, lunging towards Elizabeth. Sherlock thinks quickly, and before he can think about what he's doing, Sherlock lunges forward and tackles Taylor to the side, away from Elizabeth. No one hurts my new friend, Sherlock thought angrily. He quickly backs away from Taylor, heading towards a certain Elizabeth Peyton.
"Are you alright?" Sherlock asks her concerned.
"I-I'm fine." Elizabeth stutters, looking at Sherlock in awe. "No one has ever did that for me."
"Yeah, well, that's what friends are for." Sherlock grins. "Right?"
"I think so." Elizabeth said, the both of them giggling at the lack of knowledge they have for friends. They turn back to the scene, to see Taylor being taken away by teachers, while one stays for the both of them, needing their side of the story.

"Why was she talking to you in the first place?" Sherlock asks Elizabeth at lunch. After the whole incident, they were taken to class, and continue the day like nothing ever happened. Taylor though, is being watched from the teachers in case Taylor went near the two kids.
"Don't know really, " Elizabeth answers, taking a bite of her apple. "I walked to school minding my own business, when she walked up to me and just shoved me away from her since I was apparently in her way. Honestly, it isn't that hard to just walk around someone but she had just to make a big deal and shove me away."
"And I thought people were supposed to be nice to the new kids." Sherlock mutters, spotting Taylor in the distance glaring at them. "It was in a book I saw it. They were really nice and kind to the new person."
"You can't trust books all the time, William." Elizabeth said, snapping him out of his stare down with Taylor. "I mean, yes you can trust books and all, but not the fictions. Am I making any sense?"
"Yeah, you are." Sherlock replies, allowing her to call him his actual name.
"How come you don't like your first name?"
"Because it doesn't really sound nice to my ears. William Holmes. I prefer Sherlock Holmes. That's sounds much better."
"William Sherlock Scott Holmes." Elizabeth tries out. "Kind of has a nice ring to it."
"Whatever, " he waves off, packing up his lunch. One minute until the bell rings for class to begin again. "I am only allowing my parents, you, and the teachers to call me William."
"I feel special!" Elizabeth grins, chucking her apple core across the school courtyard to the bin. Perfect throw.
"You should." Sherlock chuckles, standing up from the bench when the bell started to ring for class. He holds his hand out for her to take like a gentleman. "Come on, new friend. Time for class again."
