chapter 2

I felt her most in our meadow. I went there, not just for the memories, but the feel of her being there. I saw her in most things. The bands she liked, her vanilla ice cream, the white dresses I saw on girls, her dog, her house. But not as much as I saw her in our meadow. I felt like she was there, sitting next to me. Making everything okay.

I’m laying here today. Under the sun, the flowers creating a scent, making think it was her, right under my nose. I closed my eyes, feeling peace. My heart actually didn’t hurt as much here. It felt like a sharp, small pain. Usually it feels like someone was slowly burning a hot spoon into my heart. But not in our meadow.

And then I saw her, actually saw her. She walked up to me, in her white flowing dress, though it wasn’t stained. She had no scars. Her skin looked translucent, but I could see it was still her. I sat up, staring at her in awe.

“I’m glad I can still make you drool.” She laughs.

Tears fall down and I stand slowly, making sure I didn’t scare her away.

“Val?” my voice cracks. She nods, smiling tightly, tears falling. She keeps nodding and runs to me, throwing her arms around my neck, her legs around my waist.

“Drew.” She breathes. She feels cold.

“Valery. Why did you leave me?” I sob, breathing her shampoo in, tightening my arms around her.

“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.” Her voice cracks and she sobs against my body.

We clutch each other and it feels like my heart is breaking again, and filling up with the love I need. My love.

She pulls her head back, crushing her lips against mine. God, I missed her lips against mine. I missed her body against mine. I missed her. I missed everything about her.

She breaks the kiss with a grin, “It’s time to go.”

I frown, “Val no-”

“Come with me, Drew.” She kisses my nose, “Come with me.” She whispers.

“Okay.” I smile, “Okay.” We kiss again, smiling, laughing. I drop her down on the ground softly.

She whispers in my ear, “Chase me.” And she sprints off, laughing as loud as she can.

I look back at my body and except that I’m dead. That she’s dead. And for the first time, that’s okay.

I smile and run after her.
