Twice (2 years before)
I remember the day her life changed. It was around 2 o’clock in the morning. She stood on top of the railing. Railing? The bridge railing. It was broad. Maybe, a little too broad to be labelled as a railing.
I would tell you how she felt but, she didn't really feel anything.
Everything was numb. The past months or was it years? had played with our senses so much that now, her senses had given up.
They were ready to fall. To fall into the depths of the waves. The accepting, aggressive, blue ocean waves.
She closed her eyes and jumped. There was a loud splash. Closing her eyes, she refused to see anything going around her. She was lying still, forming bubbles into the ocean. She was letting the ocean devour her in.
She was dying.
But, the next morning she woke up. In a strange place but, she did wake up. Her eyes wandered around and she coughed, water.
Is this heaven? she thought to herself and sat up. It certainly wasn’t.
Although, her surroundings were pretty posh and her bed was as soft as a cloud, this wasn’t what she expected. She didn’t expect a giant window on her right side. She didn’t expect to feel daylight touch her face ever again. She didn’t expect to be alive at all.
She wasn’t in heaven.
But she wasn’t in hell either.
She was on Earth. The place she was stuck in.
Why am I alive? She thought and a tear fell down her left eye. Soon, she had broken down and loud sobs, whimpers and muffled screams filled up the room.
Thus, she didn’t notice when someone was standing in front of her with a glass of water. The glass was pressed up on her lips without hesitance.
Melody gulped the water down greedily, as she tried to control her sobs.
“Do you like donuts? I have got the glazed original ones. And I have got some chocolate cake too. I mean whatever you like.”
She looked up at him. He have her a big grin.
Her eyes squinted and her face reflected what she felt, anger.
“You can have both if you like. You don’t have to be angry.” He shrugged.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because, I know you like both of them.” he said acting oblivious.
“No, Edric. Why did you save me? Why am I alive?” Melody shouted. She got up and stood before him. He towered her 5 feet 3 inches self by at least a foot. She, however, was stern. He couldn’t do this to her.
“Melody, its okay. Have some cake.” Edric laughed.
“Is this funny to you? Is my life funny to you? I don’t want your effing cake.”
“Donuts?” Edric picked one of the originals up and took a bite.
“It’s good.” he said and smirked.
“Why did you do this?”, she asked her voice a bare whisper.
“I wasn’t gonna let you die. I wasn’t gonna let you give up.” Edric said and for the first time, looked serious.
“I have got a therapist for you.”
“Are you insane? I don’t want a therapist.” Melody screamed.
“You know what, how did you manage to do all in this one night? How did you even know I was on the bridge?” Melody asked.
“You sent me a text 20 minutes before your thing.Your phone’s location services thing was open. I could see the area you sent the text from.”
“I hate you. This isn’t a joke.”
“I know, so can you eat and dress yourself up. The appointment is booked for 4pm.”
“What do I change into? What time is it?”
“I bought you some. They are on the chair over there.” He pointed towards a wooden chair.
“Umm…It is 10, by the way. Also, I am in the drawing room, if you want me.” Melody nodded.
Edric smiled at her and turned to leave.
He sat on the sofa with a crestfallen and regretful face. He didn’t know what to do. His best friend was adamant on committing suicide and all he could do was get her a effing therapist. He knew she was hurt. He knew she was broken. How did he allow himself to romanticise about her when he knew it would be no good.
He knew she might go to these lengths and still, he didn’t try to stop her. He knew how unpredictable she was and how much she hated life- Wait! Why is it so quiet?
Edric ran towards Melody’s room, his heart dreading taking each step.
He opened the door and there she was.
Lying on the floor with blood flowing out off her forearm. She had done it again.
