chapter 6
VALERY’S POV.Drew and I had left the meadow after a while. He dropped me off to my house, and I now laid in bed, petting Alaric. I heard the garage door open and Uncle Riley pound up the stairs. I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep.
I heard my bedroom door open and my uncle peek in. He made a kissing noise and shut the door and I heard him pound back downstairs to his room. I opened my eyes and gently shoved Alaric off my bed, putting on my shoes. I had my clothes on still from earlier today.
Alaric growled softly at me, as if disapproving me sneaking out. I shushed him. He was probably going to have a fit. I grabbed his color, dragging him to my door. I opened it and tried pushing him out, but he restrained against me. I huffed, giving up.
“Fine. I guess you have to go with me, then.’’ I put my hands on my hips. And he gave me a look.
I walked out of my room, trying to match Alaric’s toenail clacks on the floor, with my boots clacks. He ran down the stairs, making a bunch of noise, but Uncle Riley didn’t come out of the room. I went down the stairs slowly, trying not to make any sounds. I even breathed shallow. Alaric whined at the front door. I cringed, it echoed off the white walls.
“Alaric!” Uncle Riley yelled from his room, I breathed in sharply. If he walked out of his room right now, I’d be dead. He would catch me.
Alaric stopped whining, and I stood at the bottom of the stairs, trying to super hear my uncle. But he was playing guitar now, recording. Good, this gives me the chance to leave, since he’ll be focused on his music.
I placed my hand on the cold door handle, turning it slowly. I cringed when I heard it click, but the guitar kept strumming. Alaric lifted his paw and scratched the door. I shooed him away with my leg. I yanked open the door, the only sound coming from it was a soft creak. The guitar stopped strumming. I paled, my heart in my throat.
I’m going to get caught. I knew it. I gulped, and Alaric looked between me and the open door. I heard drums hit softly from Uncle Riley’s room. I felt my muscles un-tense and blew out the breath I was holding.
“Come on,” I whispered to Alaric, nudging him out the door before me.
I shut the door as quietly as I could. And walked down the creaky steps, snapping my fingers at Alaric so he knew to stay at my side. He padded across the grass, falling in step beside me. I started jogging, down the graveled path way, turning into town.
Alaric trotted next to me the whole time. When I got tired, I slowed to a walk and Alaric whined. He wanted to keep running. But he complied, walked slowly next to me.
I laughed breathlessly, “I’m not in shape, pal. I eat all day and tend to stay in bed.” Well, when I’m not with Drew, that is.
I saw our destination coming up. The gas station.
I looked down at Alaric and looked for a particular face. Alaric growled, his hackles raising. I shushed him, patting his head.
And I saw him. I walked slowly to him. He leaned against the brick wall of the gas store, a light coming down and shining on him, so there were shadows hiding parts of his face. It looked like a movie scene.
“Why did you want to meet, Kale?” I asked, coming to a stop a few feet in front of him. Alaric growled lowly, his head hanging, his ears back.
Kale sneered at him, “You still have this mutt?”
Alaric snarled and snapped his teeth at him in response. I lifted my chin up proudly, “Yes.”
Kale snorted pulling a cigarette to his lips. He lit it and the flame illuminated his face momentarily sharping his cheekbones and lips.
I used to kiss those lips. More than I kissed Drew. But as I look back at my memories with Kale, I never enjoyed it as much as I did with Drew.
“I wanted to win you over.” Kale said blowing a puff of smoke in my face. I wrinkled my nose and waved a hand in front of my face. Why would someone so something that kills you, just to feel good? And I suddenly felt bad about that thought, because I cut to feel good, so I die a little bit more and live a little bit more.
“I sent Drew to you, to tell you I don’t want to come “home” with you.” I put air quotes around home.
He pointed at my exposed, still healing wrists. “You still do that shit?” I glared at him, and he shook his head, taking another pull from his cancer stick.
“I’m leaving.” I snap my fingers at Alaric, who gives low throaty bark to Alaric.
“Wait, Clash-” he reached out for me. I hit his hand away.
“Fūck you.” I snap at him, Alaric snarls.
“Shut up!” he lunged for me, tugging me into him harshly. He whirls me around and slams my body against the brick building, my head snaps back against it with a sharp thud and I see white. I moan in pain.
“I’ve been waiting for you too long, Valery.” And with that he crushes his lips against mine. It doesn’t feel good, at all. In fact it hurts too much, his gums against mine. When did I ever think he was a good kisser? My head pounds. I hear fabric tearing and Alaric snarling when Kale broke his “kiss.” More like gum smacking.
“Stupid mutt!” He kicks Alaric in the side, who yelped. If wasn’t pissed off before, I am now. I form my hand in a fist, getting off the wall. I step to Kale.
“Hey!” I yell. Kale turned and I slam my fist in jaw. He propels backward, tripping over his shoes, falling on his butt on the asphalt. Alaric lunges for him. I snap my fingers. Alaric backs up, but snarls and growls, foaming at the mouth.
“Get out of here. I don’t want to see your face again. I will sick this dog on you.” I point at Alaric, who barks, making the drool fly. Kale nods, a grim look on his face. He stands slowly, like it hurts.
“Look, I’ll leave you alone. But I need to ask you a favor.” Kale kicks at the ground, avoiding my gaze. I see a bruise on his jaw. I feel satisfied.
I sighed, “What.”
“Please, just call Gabs or something, she misses you and worries everyday about you.” Something passes over his eyes when he said her name.
“Gabi?” I remembered about her texts and calls. I haven’t returned any since I moved here. I even got a new phone number. I wanted to forget everything in my past life.
“Yes.” He clenched his jaw. And I knew that look better than anyone.
Kale was in love with her.
“Goodbye, Kale.”
“Promise me, Clash.” He eyes plead.
“Fine, that’s all you’re going to get out of me.” I snap my fingers at Alaric again and I turn my back to him, walking away.
I come up my steps and turn the handle slowly. Only- it doesn’t. I softly groan and mentally kick myself. I forgot the key, and there’s no other way in. I smack my forehead. What am I going to do? I can’t just knock on my door, Uncle Riley would freak out if it was me. I can’t just climb to my second story window, plus I had to keep Alaric with me.
I plopped down on the porch, my feet on the second step. Alaric whined and laid down next to me. I dropped a hand on his hand, looking down at him. His teddy bear brown eyes looked back at me.
“I think we’re going to have to sleep on the porch, Alaric.” I sighed.
And imagine of Drew popped into my mind.
“Maybe not.”
