Chapter 42- Breakout

A day later, under the full moon, we struck.
Miranda ripped the manacles from her wrists, tearing her skin and dragging it to bone. She struggled not to scream as I healed her.
"That.. hurt more then I intended. Hold on." She closed her eyes and her hands glowed red and black. She put her hands against the bars separating us and they slowly disintegrated, turning into black dust on the floor. My eyes widened.
"That was amazing-"
"Yeah and its not over little dude. stay quiet." She whispered. She turned to the wall and did the same thing, closing her eyes. Nothing seemed to happen however.
"Is it working?" I whispered.
"Somethings blocking me. Give me a minute."
I waited patiently for her to finish. Suddenly I heard a few shouts of guards at the end of the hall.
"Hurry! They're coming!"
She growled.
"I'm going as fast as I can!"
I looked around desperately.
"Do my chains!"
"What??"
"My chains! I have an idea!"
She hesitated then quickly grabbed my chains, disintegrating them. The manacle stayed, but I had worse problems to deal with.
"Try to use it on the bars instead."
"Are you crazy?! We can't fight that many guards!"
"Trust me."
She sighed.
"Fine."
She turned and touched the bars, turning them into ashes. She started looking tired as the magic took hold.
I ran out into the hallway, turning my head from side to side to try and find a exit.
"This way!" I shouted, grabbing her arm and dragging us along. She stumbled and followed.
I turned the corner and froze as I saw a band of guards.
"Hey! Stop right there!" The lead guard shouted.
Without thinking I lifted my palm, aimed at the guards, and felt ice shoot up my arm. A loud flash erupted from my fingers, turning the room white and blinding the guards, as well as my friend.
"GOD CHILD- Why did you do that?!"
I didn't stop to answer questions, and instead ran, shoving the guards aside and leading the way for Miranda. She stumbled a bit, rubbing her eyes and cursing, but I ignored her for the time being. We kept running, desperately looking for an exit. Finally, we found one. We burst through the door and ran up 3 flights of stairs, ending inside the castle. We stopped to catch our breathe.
"What the hell was that? I thought you said your only power was healing??"
"I-I can do other things too if I'm forced to, but its hard."
"Well next time please warn me. I don't want to get blinded again."
I nodded and pointed towards a door.
"We need to head through there, past the hall, then out the exit."
"OR we just go to the roof and fly away. Your strong enough to carry me as well, right Nico?"
I hesitated.
"I'm not sure, but I guess its worth a try. Certainly easier then going through the main entrance as I planned. Alright, let's do it."
"Lead the way."
I got up and half walked half ran through the richly displayed rooms, and finally found the stairs. I ran up them two at a time, but before I could reach the roof I froze.
"What is it?"
"I... I'm not sure. But I feel like we're missing something."
"WHAT are you talking about?! We need to leave!."
"Meet me on the roof, I'll be there soon."
"Are you nuts boy?? The guards will-"
"Trust me."
She growled and hesitated, then continued up the stairs. I ran down the stairs and made a sharp turn around the corridor. The path seemed so clear to me, but to what I could not tell you. It just felt.. important. I ran down a small, quiet hallway. I knew this was near the royal families private chambers. So what could be here..?
Then I felt it. A strange, beautiful power shining through the doorway up ahead. I hesitated. Something felt a bit off about this magic, something... unnatural. Without meaning to, my feet moved in its direction. I peeked through the doorway and my eyes widened.
There, sitting in a beautifully decorated display case, was a clay eye. It was a pale gray color, and it held a black cord looped around it. Cautiously I approached it.
When I got close enough I squinted, trying to peer through the glass. Along the edges were runes.
"Whoever bears this fated eye, shall live for the end of time. Once upon a fevered dream, under the dark and lost--
"Over there! I could have sworn they went this way."
I cursed and quickly swiped the artifact, stuffing it under my clothes. It would have to wait for another time for its secrets to become mine.
I made my way to the door, and peeked out. Two guards stood outside, arguing.
"Your brain is full of rocks, Raze. They are more likely to be going through the roundabout area then here."
"I swear I heard something!"
"Well we can check if it pleases your troubled heart." The guard rolled his eyes.
"Gladly."
They started making their way up the hallway, checking in each of the rooms. I cursed again, desperately thinking of a way to get past unnoticed.
"Think, think Nico... " I looked around, and my eyes alighted upon some curtains. I ran over and brushed them aside, dust coming off at the touch. I stifled a sneeze.
"Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
"I could have sworn someone sneezed."
I quickly unlatched the window, shoving it outward. I looked out. Below me was the waterfall, thundering and pounding against the rocks below. I swallowed.
Before I could decide whether or not to jump through, I heard someone shout behind me.
"I knew it! Stop! Prisoner!"
Without hesitation I jumped out, spreading my wings. I glided for a bit over the waterfall, then flapped. I flew upwards, heading towards the roof, where I knew I would meet Miranda and we could escape.
I just had to not get shot down first.
